2018 Changes to Washington State Bankruptcy Exemptions

Washington state added a new exemption and changed existing exemption code sections effective June 2018.

Bankruptcy exemptions allow a debtor to protect property needed to work and live after a bankruptcy proceeding. Washington state added a new exemption and changed existing exemption code sections effective June 2018.

  • New personal exemption. Washington’s new exemption protects a filer’s cell phone, personal computer, and printer. (RCW § 6.15.010(1)(c).)
  • Wildcard exemption. The wildcard exemption code section is new. The exemption amount remains unchanged. (RCW § 6.15.010(1)(d)(ii).)
  • Other exemptions redesignated. The exemptions previously found in RCW § 6.15.010(1)(c)-(1)(e) have been redesignated as RCW § 6.15.010(1)(d)-(1)(f).
