Legal Editor - Divorce and Family Law

We produce articles, books, apps, and software—including the renowned Quicken WillMaker—that demystify the legal process and empower people to take control of their legal lives. Our Legal Editor position is for a lawyer with natural writing and editing ability, careful attention to detail, and a talent for taking complex legal issues and making them accessible to the layperson. We are based in the Bay Area but are open to remote candidates prepared to travel to our office from time to time.

Responsibilities
The Divorce and Family Law Legal Editor will:
- write and edit articles for Nolo's websites
- train and work with freelance writers
- review, update, and develop legal forms
- update books and articles, and
- contribute to other projects as a subject matter expert.

Requirements
The Divorce and Family Law Legal Editor must have:
- excellent writing and editing skills and careful attention to detail
- a facility for writing for a consumer audience, explaining complex concepts in an easy-to-digest manner
- a law degree from an ABA-accredited law school and no professional disciplinary history
- at least two years' background as a practicing attorney, including experience in family law, and
- the ability and willingness to create and edit content in additional areas of law.

Legal Editor - Business Formation

Our Legal Editor position is for a lawyer with natural writing and editing ability, careful attention to detail, and a talent for taking complex legal issues and making them accessible to the layperson. The Business Formation Legal Editor will:

  • create, update, and test business forms and our entity formation service, all sold to consumers on Nolo.com
  • write and edit articles for Nolo's websites
  • update books and articles
  • train and work with freelance writers, and
  • ensure the legal accuracy of forms and other content.

Requirements

The Business Formation Legal Editor must have:

  • excellent writing and editing skills and careful attention to detail
  • a law degree from an ABA-accredited law school and no professional disciplinary history
  • at least two years' background as a practicing attorney, including experience with business formation (experience in other areas of law being a plus), and
  • the ability and willingness to create and edit content in additional areas of law.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with:

  • creating forms, surveys, and software, and
  • QA'ing web applications.

Legal Researcher

It offers the opportunity to collaborate with Nolo's editors and freelance writers by gathering information to support and update Nolo's legal books and articles.

Responsibilities:
The Legal Researcher will:
- Research statutes, new legislation, and case law for Nolo articles and products.
- Perform legal research using commercial tools like Westlaw and general Internet queries, and
- Update Nolo's own database of statute-based information.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The Legal Researcher must:
- Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Show strong writing skills and careful attention to detail.
- Work well with others.
- Be able to manage several projects at once.
- Have excellent computer skills, including familiarity with Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with legal terms and the legal system.
- Previous legal research experience.
- Legal database experience or familiarity (e.g. Westlaw, LexisNexis).
