Firm Overview

Among the prior partners of the firm are an aide to President Lincoln during the Civil War, an Attorney General of Iowa, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, an Iowa Supreme Court Justice, and numerous other judges and dignitaries.

O'Connor & Thomas, P.C. has the unique distinction of being the only law firm in Iowa that has had two partners, William Avery Smith and E. Marshall Thomas, receive the Award of Merit of the Iowa State Bar Association.

While the firm has changed its name many times since 1840 to reflect membership, it became O'Connor & Thomas, P.C. in 1984. Today the firm consists of shareholders John C. O'Connor, A. John Arenz, Chad C. Leitch, Richard K. Whitty, James E. Goodman, Jr., Davin C. Curtiss, Paul J. Sigwarth, Peter D. Arling, Joshua P. Weidemann, Christopher C. Fry, senior attorneys Brendan T. John Arenz was born in Dubuque, Iowa. John graduated magna cum laude from Marquette University in 1975, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Tonya A. Trumm

Tonya A. Trumm was born in Dubuque, Iowa. She obtained her law degree in 1999 from The University of Iowa College of Law. She previously worked at the Milwaukee, Wisconsin law firms of Godfrey & Kahn, S.C., where she was a member of the Business Finance, Bankruptcy & Restructuring Practice Group, and at Michael Best & Friedrich, LLP, where she was a member of the Transactional Practice Group. Most recently she was at American Trust & Savings Bank. She is licensed in Iowa and Wisconsin, and belongs to both the Iowa and Wisconsin Bar Associations. She will be concentrating on Commercial, Banking, Finance, and Bankruptcy and Creditors' Rights Law.

Joshua P. Weidemann

Joshua P. Weidemann was born in Dubuque, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree with Distinction in 2000. Josh attended the University of Iowa College of Law, earning his Juris Doctor with High Distinction in 2004. Upon graduation from law school, Josh was elected to membership in the Order of the Coif. He joined the firm in 2004, upon his admission to the Iowa Bar. In May of 2012 Josh became licensed in Illinois. He currently belongs to the Dubuque County, Iowa, and American Bar Associations. Josh is a member of the Dubuque County Young Lawyers. He is also a member of the Tri-State Estate Planning Council (past President) and the Iowa State Bar Association Probate, Trust & Estate Planning Section and Council. In addition, Josh served on the Board of Directors of Bilt-Well Credit Union from 2004-2012. Joshua P. Weidemann

Richard K. ("Rich") Whitty

Richard K. Whitty earned his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law, graduating with High Distinction. He also earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Drake University, graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

Mr. Whitty has been admitted to practice in Iowa since 1980. Through Martindale-Hubbell, his peers have rated him "Preeminent", the highest rating accorded for legal knowledge, analytical capabilities, judgement, communication ability, legal experience, and ethical standards.

Mr. Whitty belongs to the Dubuque County, Iowa, and American Bar Associations, the Iowa Defense Counsel Association, the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel, and the Defense Research Institute, Inc. He has served on the Iowa District 1A Judicial Nominating Committee.
