John F. Carroll, Partner

John F. Carroll's legal career began at the law firm of Whitestone, Brent, Young & Merril, P.C. in 1993. As an associate attorney, his practice focused on representation of individuals charged with misdemeanors and felonies in the courts of Northern Virginia. After two years of private practice, he joined the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney in Fairfax County. For nearly five years, Mr. Carroll prosecuted crimes ranging from traffic violations to murder. Working as a prosecutor in the largest and busiest county in the Commonwealth of Virginia gave him the experience and opportunity to develop the trial skills necessary to provide representation to individuals or corporations in a wide variety of trial matters. In 2004, Mr. Carroll rejoined his former colleagues at Whitestone, et al. for a brief period before forming Carroll & Carroll, P.C. Mr. Carroll is a frequent lecturer at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy.

Edward J. Nuttall, Partner

An experienced trial attorney, Edward J. Nuttall has received Martindale Hubbell's highest rating of "AV Preeminent" in the areas of Criminal Law, Litigation, and Family Law. Mr. Nuttall has been named as one of the Top 100 Criminal Defense Attorneys in Virginia by the National Trial Lawyers Association and a Top Criminal Defense Attorney and Personal Injury Attorney by Northern Virginia Magazine and Washingtonian Magazine.

Mr. Nuttall has tried civil and criminal case throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Colleen C. Sweeney

Colleen Sweeney has over 15 years of legal experience handling a substantial caseload of multifaceted complex civil litigation. Over her professional career she has achieved the goals set by her clients by utilizing strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. In the courtroom she has a proven ability to deliver effective messages in a clear concise manner. As a family law advocate, Mrs. Sweeney is adept at handling difficult negotiations while maintaining a focus on being a persuasive advocate. With a broad knowledge of the law related to divorce, custody support and education, Mrs. Sweeney can quickly identify, analyze and understand complex concepts and formulate an effective case strategy. Brandon R. Shapiro, Partner

Brandon R. Shapiro is an experienced trial lawyer having tried 83 jury trials, and hundreds of bench trials. Mr. Shapiro was named one of Northern Virginia's Top Trial Lawyers by Northern Virginia Magazine. His career began at the law firm of Whitestone, Brent, Young & Merril, P.C. As an associate, his practice focused on representing clients charged with misdemeanors, felonies, and representing clients in civil litigation. In 2006, Mr. Shapiro joined the Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney. For over 12 years, Mr. Shapiro prosecuted crimes ranging from traffic infractions to murder. His felony trial experience includes murders, robberies, abductions, malicious wounding, larcenies, and drug distribution. His misdemeanor trial experience includes hundreds of trials for assault and battery, reckless driving, driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, and other misdemeanor crimes. In addition to his regular prosecutorial duties, Mr. Shapiro was in charge of asset forfeitures and seizures for drug-related offenses, and expungements for the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.

Mr. Shapiro's experience has provided him gainful insight into the workings of the justice system allowing him to build a successful practice. W. Michael Chick, Jr.

Mike commits himself to capital murder death penalty cases and other serious criminal matters. His experience in capital litigation gives him a unique and useful perspective in representing his other criminal clients. Mike is also committed to using his position as a lawyer to serve others, and accordingly, he acts not only as retained/hired counsel for those who can afford his services, but also as a court-appointed attorney for indigent defendants who cannot otherwise afford a lawyer.
