How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

Marks & Harrison was founded in 1911 by David A. Harrison, Jr. It has continued its practice uninterrupted since that time. For over three generations our attorneys have represented the families of Virginia.

What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others?

Two members of Marks & Harrison served in the Virginia House of Delegates and were Chairman of the House Courts of Justice Committee and Chairman of the Corporation, Insurance, and Banking Committee. Two members of the firm have served as Commonwealth's Attorneys and one as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney. One served as mayor of Hopewell. Members of the firm have gone on to serve as Circuit Court and Juvenile Court judges and substitute judges. Members of the firm have also been City and County Attorneys.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

Marks & Harrison is the only firm whose members have received the three most distinguished awards of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. Among our lawyers have been a former President, a recipient of the Courageous Advocate Award, and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. No other Virginia firm has been so honored. Its members also serve on committees of the American Association for Justice and on the Board of the Southern Trial Lawyers Association.

Fletcher W. Harkrader III has been practicing law since 1983 and focuses his practice exclusively onpersonal injury. Since joining Marks & Harrison, he has achieved a number of significant results for clients in personal injury cases, including $1.2 million in a wrongful death case and $1 million in an auto accident injury case, and a jury verdict of $850,000.

Graduating from Washington and Lee University in 1980 (cum laude), he received his J.D. in 1983 from the University of Richmond School of Law. He wasLouisa CountyAttorney from 1990 until 1998. He represented the Virginia Transportation Commissioner as trial counsel by appointment of the Governor of Virginia from 1994 until January 2002 when he joined Marks & Harrison. He is currently a Principal of the Firm.
