Firm Overview

We counsel our clients not only with legal knowledge and experience, but also with compassionate insight into the entirety of their circumstances.

Our attorneys bring more than 85 years of combined experience to analysis of issues, settlement negotiations, mediations, arbitrations, collaborations and, if necessary, resolution by trial. Our two paralegal assistants add more than 45 years of experience. We continue to teach and learn from each other after all these years. Our practice is embedded in our core values:

The attorney-client relationship is and must always remain highly confidential. We are dedicated to protecting our clients' privacy and to providing our honest and thoughtful assessments of each client's needs based on their unique circumstances and our knowledge of the law and practical experience.

Our reputation in the legal, financial and mental health communities has been built on our successful representation of clients with complex financial issues, including valuation and allocation of assets and income from virtually every industry, beneficial interests in trusts, and challenging child-related issues which cannot be addressed merely by money.

We focus on innovative and creative settlement alternatives uniquely tailored to each client's needs. When all reasonable attempts to settle issues by agreement have been exhausted, we do not shy away from professional presentations in the courtroom.

Divorce is always an upsetting and unsettling life experience. We are dedicated to doing whatever we can as soon as we can and effectively as we can, to address our clients' needs as they process that experience to get to a new and happier life.

William L. Hunnicutt

After stints of military service, cross-country trucking and graduate studies in philosophy, Bill Hunnicutt found himself practicing divorce law in 1977. He has no plans to stop. In recent years, he has divided his practice approximately equally between advocacy for a client and third-party neutral service as a divorce mediator, arbitrator and court-appointed special master. With the exception of a brief foray into securities fraud and accountant malpractice litigation in the mid-1980s, he has devoted his entire legal career exclusively to assisting in the difficult and complex process of divorce.

Bill has lectured on family law financial issues and alternative dispute resolution in law schools and seminars throughout Colorado and as far away as the states of Washington and New York. He has been a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers since 1988, acknowledged continually in Best Lawyers in America since 1987, and as a "Super Lawyer" since that designation came to Colorado in 2006. He is honored to be one of 100 divorce lawyers in the United States enjoying the collegiality of the American College of Family Trial Lawyers.

Lily morphed into becoming an attorney after exploring diverse career options. She spent many years as an art dealer and appraiser of late 19th & 20th century works of art on paper. She has traveled extensively, and she is the matriarch of a large and blended family. Lily's unique background and varied interests contribute to the empathy and wisdom with which she shepherds her clients through the emotional, psychological, and financial turmoil of divorce. Lily's clients appreciate the mature and healing perspective which she brings to each client's unique circumstances to help each move forward with their lives post divorce.

Upon graduating law school, Lily joined Bill Hunnicutt at the law firm of Sherman & Howard. Their close professional partnership continued when Bill opened his own firm in 1992, and Lily became his partner shortly thereafter. Lily has been at the vanguard of Colorado divorce lawyers promoting collaborative family law. In addition to being a lecturer and trainer, she was a founding board member of the Colorado Collaborative Law Professionals, and she was a contributing author to Collaborative Law: A New Model for Dispute Resolution.

Erica Kemmerley joined Bill Hunnicutt and Lily Appelman in 1999, having already distinguished herself in her first 11 years of divorce practice as extraordinarily skilled and perceptive regarding child-related divorce issues. Upon her arrival to the firm, she rapidly augmented that expertise by developing expertise with respect to complex financial issues. In addition to her own practice, she frequently joins in Bill's representations, serving as lead counsel with respect to child-related issues and assisting with complex financial issues. Erica brings her own life experience of divorce with a young child to her practice, striving to foster and protect a healthy co-parenting relationship. She has for many years been highly regarded by her colleagues, mental health professionals and former clients in serving the best interests of children.
