Why are some Nolo documents only available as PDFs?

When possible, Nolo creates documents in rich text format (RTF) so they can be updated with a word processing program. However, if they are not in RTF, those forms are created as PDFs because they are meant to be given to someone else to fill out or because of government formatting restrictions. To be considered legally valid, certain government forms need to be hand-written or machine-typed (typewriter, not computer).

I ordered through PayPal and my Nolo transaction is still showing "Pending".

Any transactions "declined" by PayPal will remain in a "Pending" status. PayPal does not share the reason for the "decline" with vendors so you will need to contact PayPal directly to find out why the transaction was not allowed to complete. Additionally, you should see that the "Net amount" listed in your transaction shows no amount (meaning no funds were deducted from your Paypal account or credit card).

I ordered through PayPal and Nolo's transaction shows multiple times.

Nolo uses Paypal's Express Checkout option, which shows each complete transaction using multiple line items.

If you used a credit card via Paypal, the transaction shows as 3 separate line items:

  • Order From (your name)
  • Authorization
  • Express Checkout Payment Received

If you used your Paypal account funds, the transaction shows as 4 separate line items:

  • Order to Internet Brands (Nolo's parent company)
  • Pending Balance Payment - Placed
  • Pending Balance Payment - Removed
  • Express Checkout Payment Sent

These are not duplicate charges but instead every step of how this particular Paypal module settles one single transaction. You should also be able to verify that these are not double-charges based on the balance in your account, as you will notice the amount is only deducted once from your total balance.

I applied a Nolo coupon to my purchase, and Nolo taxed me based on the price before the coupon was applied. Is the tax supposed to be based on the before-coupon price?

Yes. Because Nolo publishes the material sold on our website, our coupons are considered manufacturer—not retailer—coupons. In keeping with regulations issued by the State of California, we collect tax according to the price before manufacturer coupons are applied. For more information, visit the California Board of Equalization website and to read the regulation itself, see Sales And Use Tax Regulations, which explains Regulation 1671.1 in detail.
