Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854

This Act created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska in order to facilitate the development of a transcontinental railroad. The Act was controversial because it allowed people in those territories to determine for themselves whether to allow slavery within their boundaries -- effectively nullifying the Missouri Compromise (which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36
