Lateral Support: A landowner's right to have his or her land supported by the land that lies next to it, for example, against any slippage, cave-in, or landslide. Example: a developer excavated into a hill to build an apartment building, without putting in a retaining wall. Surrounding buildings caved in, and the developer had to pay the entire value of the destroyed buildings.
