2019 Changes to Means Test Median Family Income Amounts

The median family income amounts used in bankruptcy change on November 1, 2019.

The bankruptcy median family income figures change on November 1, 2019. Filers use the amounts to complete the means test—the test that determines a filer's Chapter 7 discharge qualification—and when calculating a Chapter 13 repayment plan. The figures change each year and vary widely between states, as shown by the following single filer state median income increases:

  • Alabama $47,680 ($2,248 increase)
  • Hawaii $64,803 ($1,666 increase)
  • Minnesota $57,017 ($3,543 increase)
  • Texas $49,996 ($3,743 increase)
  • Washington $66,309 ($4,255 increase)

All debtors filing cases after November 1, 2019, will use the following figures (includes single filer amounts only):

Figures for families of two to six people are posted on U.S. Trustee's website (you'll add $9,000 per person for larger families). You can find the new figures by following these steps:

  • Select "Means Testing Information" from the menu on the left of the page.
  • Scroll down to the box entitled "Data Required for Completing the 122A Forms and the 122C Forms."
  • Use the drop-down menu to select "11/1/2019 and after."
  • Click on the "Census Bureau Median Family Income By Family Size" link.
