Printing and Exporting

After you have previewed and (if necessary) revised your WillMaker document, you may be ready to print it or export it to your comupter. This section of the Users' Manual explains how.

Printing Your Document

To print your completed document:

  1. Go to the Print Preview screen.
  2. Click Print (or choose File > Print) to open the Print dialog box.

You may print your document either single-sided or double-sided. All WillMaker documents are valid either way.

Note: If the document is a will, durable power of attorney for finances or health care directive, you'll see a dialog box asking which specific documents in the document set you would like to display. If you don't want to print all of them, uncheck the ones you don't want before clicking OK (but be sure to include all of them when you print out the version you intend to sign and make legal).

Caution Page range counts may include instructions. When you print your document, signing instructions are included unless you click No under Print signing instructions (found in the bottom right-hand corner of the Print dialog box.) When included, these instructions print before the document.

If you enter page numbers in the From: and To: boxes of the Print range section of the Print dialog box without turning off the option to print signing instructions, keep in mind that Quicken WillMaker Plus counts from the first page actually printed, which is the first instruction page (some documents have more than one instruction page). Be sure to factor these extra pages in when you are specifying the range of pages you want to print.

Exporting Your Document

You can export your document to a PDF or text file.

Exporting to PDF

To export your document to PDF:

  1. From the Print Preview screen, click the Save PDF button.
  2. In the window that opens, navigate to the place where you want to save your document and click Save.
  3. You'll then see a dialog box asking whether you'd like to view the exported file. If you click No, you can later use My Computer or Windows Explorer to locate your exported file so you can open it.

Note: You will need Adobe Reader installed on your computer. Download it free from www.adobe.com.

Exporting to Text

From the Preview and Print screen, you can export your document to text by selecting File > Export Document. WillMaker will then prompt you to select a location for your document and will ask you whether you want to open it in your word processing program.

However, do not export your document to text, unless absolutely necessary. WillMaker offers a substantial range of formatting options (see Changing How Your Document Looks) for fine-tuning your document's appearance. It’s rarely a good idea to export to text. If you have questions about the language in a document, or if you would like to change its language, take the document to an experienced estate planning attorney and get advice on how to accomplish your goals.

That said, if WillMaker does not support the formatting required by your county recorder, exporting to text can be useful. For example, if your county requires specific text in the top margin of a document, the only way to accomplish this is by exporting your document to text and editing it in Word or another word processor.

If you do export your document to text, you may need to insert hash marks between some pages. The instructions that print with your text document explain this. Read them carefully.
