Pregnant employees are also eligible to receive benefits through California’s short-term disability insurance (SDI) program. These employees can receive 55% of their wages during the time that they are disabled due to pregnancy and childbirth—usually at least four weeks before birth and six to eight weeks after. Once SDI benefits are paid out, these employees can begin to receive PFL benefits for time off to bond with the baby. PFL benefits and SDI benefits are paid consecutively, not at the same time. However, SDI benefits can be integrated with the employee’s PTO or sick leave in the same manner as PFL. For more information, see our article on California SDI benefits.
