Am I Eligible for California Paid Family Leave Benefits?

California’s eligibility requirements for paid family leave (PFL) are relatively easy to meet. First, employees must earn at least $300 during a 12-month base period prior to the claim. Second, employees must take leave for one of the following covered reasons:

  • to bond with a new child (by birth, adoption, or placement through the foster care system), or
  • to care for a seriously ill spouse, domestic partner, child, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, or sibling.

Leave for an employee’s own illness does not qualify for PFL. However, there are other programs that provide benefits for ill employees, including California paid sick leave and California short-term disability benefits.
