What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

We think a client should fully educate themselves on the legal issues they're facing. It's especially important for clients to speak with knowledgeable criminal defense practitioners to determine if the law firm they're speaking with is a good fit for them. While you must rely on the advice and counsel of the law firm you choose to represent you to fight the government, you should still understand the penalties you're facing as well as some of the defenses your attorney should know to raise. Before you choose a law firm, take some time to interview your prospective attorney(s) to ensure this is a good fit from both a personal and professional perspective. While you shouldn't expect the attorney to lay out a full gameplan for the defense during that initial meeting, you should expect that he or she can and will answer basic questions about the system, the players and your case.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

We are always willing to review documents prepared by clients if we think it helps us better understand and therefore, better defend the client against the charges levied by the government. With that said, we don't make it a practice to review investigation reports until we've been retained on a case. We also discourage clients from trying to represent themselves on any criminal matter.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

No. We would never "coach" a client to represent themselves. No one, and I mean no one, can represent themselves effectively. This isn't a matter of intelligence, education or skill but a matter of advocacy. You can't advocate for yourself and answer uncomfortable questions posed to you by the judge or district attorney. Even experienced attorneys who find themselves charged with crimes retain the services of an experienced law firm such as ours. You should do the same.

How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?

Our firm does not engage in any of these alternatives because these are civil remedies used in personal injury and family law cases. They have no place in the criminal defense field.

What are your firm's strengths and style?

Our strengths are based on our relationships with prosecutors and judges throughout the state of Maine as well as our trial and litigation experience. There are plenty of law firms that will gladly take your money in order to plead you guilty. We're not one of those firms. We put as much time and sweat into your case as is necessary so that we can obtain a just result. Sometimes that means going to trial in impossible situations because that's your only hope for walking away from a criminal conviction. We're also very client focused. Our office staff are here to assist you through all facets of your case. We have a philosophy that "once you're a client, you're always a client". That means if we worked on a criminal case for you in the past and now, 10 years later, you need assistance with something related to your old case, you can pick up the phone and call us. We're still here to help you.

Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?

Our law firm is very selective in the pro bono work we do. Our pro bono work is focused on our military veterans who've been charged with non-DUI related crimes.

Is your firm willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?

No. We would never represent a criminal client on a portion of their case. If you're charged with a crime, you need to get WTB LAW involved to handle your case start to finish. It's usually too late to get us involved to try your case before a jury when you find out that you picked the wrong law firm to defend you. Choose wisely and get us involved at the start of the case.

What are your policies about dividing work within the firm to make the process most cost-effective for the client?

While we're not insensitive to costs, it's not our primary focus. We do our best to control costs but not at the expense of providing the very best criminal defense services to our clients. If cost is the primary motivator, we might not be the right law firm for you. If obtaining the very best legal representation so you can keep out of jail is the primary motivator, give us a call.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

What distinguishes our law firm from all others is our method of communicating with our clients. We answer the phones. We return calls promptly. We answer emails. We call you back on weekends and holidays. We are here for you and we don't forget that when you've paid our fee like other law firms do. You're not a dollar sign and you're not a case file number. You're a person and I promise you that the attorneys and staff at WTB LAW will treat you with the utmost respect and dignity that you would expect and deserve. Good communication skills seem to be a lost skill in the legal community and are the biggest source of bar complaints for attorneys. But not here. We care about you and your future and we will do everything in our power to obtain the very best possible result in your case. And that includes the highest level of communications with you.

What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others?

Our attorneys have received countless hours of specialized training devoted to defending against drunk driving charges. Our law firm has become synonymous with excellence in DUI defense but that's not all we do. Our attorneys have a wealth of experience defending people against sex crimes like gross sexual assault, unlawful sexual contact and child molestation charges. We have serious trial experience that we bring to bear in all of our clients' cases.
