A former 22 year state trooper who helps good people and professionals charged with DWI, Misdemeanors and Felonies keep their dignity, professional license and careers in tact!
The Inniss Firm, PLLC, is a boutique DWI and criminal defense firm. Founded by a former 22 year New York State Trooper.

The rare attorney who has insight and experience from actually walking in an officer's shoes for over 2 decades. I have made the types of arrests and handled the type of situation in which you are charged. Having such insight and experience of an officer, I put that firsthand into play when approaching the case and defending clients' charges.

The firm's philosophy is to provide unparalleled legal counsel and guidance. Counsel that embraces the totality of the circumstance and delves into the client's background as well and raising defenses based on knowledge about how cops react and engage prior to arriving on the scene to address a situation.

What did the officer do immediately prior to arrival at the scene to address the situation? Having that frame of mind can be helpful. Also, knowledge of the client's background and experience(s). Client focused and centered.

Thereafter, we engage with laser focus on your case particulars. We demystify the charge(s), the criminal justice system and processes overall.

Call for a complimentary case-strategy session. We can help. Laser-focused on defending you against the allegations. So you can get back to your life.

You are not a fee. We take time to learn about you.

We appreciate that each client represents an individual who is the sum total of positive life experiences. You are more than the current criminal charge levied against you.
We make sure the prosecutor knows this.

"Sometimes, good people make mistakes. On occasion, good cops make mistakes as well."

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

A 22 year former state trooper stops a lot of cars.

He or she makes a lot of arrests. Comes to the aid of, and assists, lots of other cops. In my case, cops from local, state and federal agencies. As well as my state police colleagues.

I have originated too many cases to mention. Hundreds if not thousands of them over 22 years. As a uniformed trooper, Investigator and Senior Investigator. In many parts of the state. As a Senior Investigator, I oversaw a team of Investigators. Reviewed and approved their investigations. Their arrests. Their case reports.

What does all of that mean? None of the above matters if my past experience does not assist current clients. Assists in their defenses. Think it helps a client if the attorney has actually made arrests? The same type of arrest he is now defending? Think it helps if the defense attorney knows the procedures a cop must follow; tends to follow; or a general sense of how the cop thinks.

The discussions in the cruiser before a car is pulled over.
What cops are inclined to write in the police report; and perhaps more importantly, what they will omit that is advantageous to the defense!

Do you believe it helps the Accused if the attorney can think like a cop; knows an officer's ways; the thought process, the procedures, the fundamental decision-making protocols before a traffic stop? The forms and reports that need to be completed? How to go from a stop to an arrest with a vehicle or physical search in between?

Does it benefit if the defense attorney knows firsthand how cops are trained to write reports. To conduct investigations? To include and omit things?

A core competencies include the ability to investigate.
After 22 years, it is in my DNA... From traffic stops to homicides. Think that background helps the Accused?

You are correct. A police background can be a tremendous value and resource to your case. When you have been Accused.

I have been involved in hundreds of cases -- from DWI's to drug possession to sexual assault to homicide. Some cases I originated; others I assisted other officers and agencies over the years. Now I assist the Accused. It stemmed from my experience on the other side. Some cases were all that solid. Still, they held up because many attorneys were not passionate about defending...

The ability to help and assist is what inspired and challenged me to take action. To become involved. To give back.

Sometimes, good people make mistakes. Sometimes, good cops make mistakes. No one knows that better than me. After 22 years.

What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others?

What clearly distinguishes my firm lawyers is my twenty-one (21) years in law enforcement as a State Trooper, and then ascension to Investigator and Senior Investigator handling complex criminal investigations. I have worked in many areas of the State, from New York City to Buffalo and many cities in between.

I have conducted investigations involving many areas of the state Penal Law and other areas to include Federal statutes (e.g., Continuing Criminal Enterprise cases.) I have worked in many areas both within and outside of the state. From making DWI arrests to handling complex narcotics investigations, my experience in several aspects of law enforcement has honed my abilities on the criminal defense front.

In addition, while a state trooper and attending law school, I interned in both the Erie County District Attorney's office (covers Buffalo, NY, the 2nd largest city in the state behind NYC) and the state Attorney's General's office. Thus, I am familiar with how the "sausage is made," meaning how the various prosecutorial bodies approach cases.

Lastly, there is passion. My passion for criminal law is underscored by my pursuit and graduation with an LL.M. in Criminal Law, which speaks both toward my focus and total immersion in this important discipline which impacts so many lives.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

Personalized, individual attention. Period. Clients are not a number here. Or merely a fee. Randall F. Inniss, Esq.

Randall F. Inniss

Criminal Defense attorney and former 22 year State Trooper Randall F. Inniss. Think a defense attorney who has made arrests similar to what you face can better help you? We do as well!

Randall F. Inniss entered, at age 21, the New York State Police academy where he successfully completed specialized coursework to include:

-- Breathalyzer training (former Certified Breathalyzer
Operator with NYS-issued Breathalyzer permit),
-- Criminal Investigations (misdemeanors & felonies)
-- Traffic (Crash) Investigations
-- Radar training
-- Criminal Law And Procedure
-- and much, much more!

With 11 years of service with the state police, Randall attended law school while working full-time for the State Police, then as an Investigator (handling felony cases.) While working in various units, to include state police Narcotics and the agency's elite Major Crimes (homicide) unit, Randall honed important investigative and legal skills associated with breaking down a case and analyzing it from different perspectives. He uses those skills in analyzing each client's case from a dual perspective.

Randall worked in many areas of the state, from New York City to Buffalo; from towns to villages to cities to hamlets. Again, rare experience among criminal defense attorneys.

Unlike most attorneys, Randall's background as an officer sets him apart. To be sure, a trained, street officer knows how a case is developed from the ground up. He or she knows what areas of a case might be sanitized or changed before the report's submission to supervisors. Or prosecutors.

Randall's unique qualifications include the following:

Former Breathalyzer Operator with state permit number issued (knows the ins-and-outs of DWIs from both sides.)

Currently a NHTSA-qualified (National Highway & Transportation Safety Administration) Instructor in DWI Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.

Former instructor to NBA players in traffic stops and police encounters (Randall was hired by and worked for the NBA for many years.)

With a wealth of unique experience, put the team at The Inniss Firm, PLLC to work on your case!
