While a divorce generally is not cheap we strive to keep your legal costs reasonable wherever possible. Below is a general framework of our divorce process. Free Initial Case Assessment To begin the process, we provide a free initial evaluation over the phone so that our lawyers can talk to you, get to know you, and listen to some of the details of your case. After we discuss your case we provide you with a tentative strategy for moving forward. If we are comfortable with your case, and you are comfortable with our law firm, we will schedule an appointment for you to come into our office to sign a retainer agreement and begin the process. Cost Of A Contested Divorce For a contested divorce, we generally require a retainer of $5,000.00. (Keep in mind that no two divorces are the same, so the final costs for a contested divorce, as well as the amount of the retainer, will vary depending on your case.)

Jeff Hughes, J.D.

Jeff is the principal partner at Sterling Law Offices; responsibilities include client interaction, attorney recruitment, and networking for the firm.

Prior to forming Sterling Law Offices Jeff served for nine years as a litigation attorney at a local Wisconsin law firm McLario & Helm. Additionally, Jeff founded BizLab in 2003 a successful business incubator in Menomonee Falls with over 130 employees and $20,000,000 in annual revenue.

Jeff earned a B.A. degree in history from Bob Jones University and his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1997.

At home, Jeff is the husband to Winona and dad to Liam and Jack. Other outside interests include traveling, being a voracious reader, fishing, disc golf, and leadership training and development.

Jeff became a lawyer to help people get what they want and need. Jeff says,

Dan Exner, J.D.

Attorney Exner specializes in family law and related fields. Since 2012 Attorney Exner has worked with over 180 clients dealing with divorce, child custody and other family law matters. In 2013 Dan was recognized for excellence by his peers earning the 2014 Rising Star Award from SuperLawyers.

Prior to joining Sterling Law Offices, Attorney Exner worked as a domestic litigator with the national law firm Cordell & Cordell out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His career has flourished with an understanding that each client's case is unique, there is no "one size fits all" approach, and focused attention is necessary to advance customized interests and goals.

Dan earned a B.A. degree in political science and theatre & drama from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Marquette University graduating at the top of his class.

Dan's goal as an attorney is to help members of his community in their time of need. Dan says, "Any family law action, from divorce to paternity to adoption, can be one of the most stressful periods of a person's life. I endeavor to share the burden and make sure there is a seasoned, objective voice in the emotional turmoil."

Trisha Festerling, J.D.

Attorney Festerling concentrates in family law and related fields. She has worked as a guardian at litem and is a license collaborative law attorney.

Trisha's passion for law sparked in middle school and she never let go of that drive to pursue a career in the law. She has a servants heart and she found being a lawyer allows her to have a direct access to help people.

Prior to joining Sterling Law Offices, Attorney Festerling worked as a domestic litigator with the national law firm Cordell & Cordell out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 2013 Trisha was nominated by her peers as a Rising Star and was later the winner of the 2013 Rising Star Award from SuperLawyers. Only 5% of attorney's nationally win this award.

Trisha has always been competitive and showed this off in college where at UWM, she competed as part of the Division 1 track team for two years (before leaving the US to study abroad).

Trisha earned a B.A. degree from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2001 graduating with academic honors and Magna Cum Laude. She later earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Regent University School of Law in 2007.

In law school During law school she competed in the Moot Court Board and participated in the 2006 National Constitution Moot Court Competition where she placed 6th place nationally. She was also part of the James Kent American Inns of Court.

When Trisha is outside of the workplace she is with family. She spends time reading, hiking, and skipping rocks on the beach. She enjoys going to the zoo with family as well as the Milwaukee Public Museum.

Trisha says, "As a lawyer, I am often a buffer between pain and reasonableness. When I have the opportunity to alleviate someone's worries, to relieve the stress in life by explaining the basics of the law, I have done what I have been called to do. The result has been personal satisfaction that I am not sure could have been achieved doing anything else."
