Firm Overview

Patents are usually for new material items, gadgets, software, or technical processes. Other things, such as business ideas or recipes, may be covered by trademarks, copyrights, or trade secrets, but are usually not patentable.

My law firm, PatentAssociate.com, is a solo practice (boutique) intellectual property firm specializing in patent prosecution. I write, analyze, and prosecute US and international utility patents, provisional applications, and design patents.

I also handle other IP work, including trademarks, prior art searches, freedom of action searches, and the like.

I work with clients ranging from first-time inventors to sophisticated entrepreneurs, CEO/CTOs, and companies ranging from startups to medium-sized companies. Whatever your background, I try to understand both your inventions and business objectives at a reasonably deep level. I also try to explain the various legal options to you so that you can make well-informed decisions.

I have a good track record of success with the USPTO and can provide links to my portfolio of issued patents and trademarks upon request.

Patents

I do a wide variety of patent work in many technical areas, including utility patents, provisional patents, design patents, and international patents. This includes patent applications, patent prosecution, prior art searches, and litigation support.

...

Except for complex artwork and a few other specialized areas, I typically do most work myself. Thus you can be assured that the person you are talking to will be the same person who is ultimately handling your work.

I am registered with both the California Bar and the USPTO patent bar. Thus I am certified and qualified under Federal law to handle patents, trademarks, and copyrights throughout the US. I can also handle these matters internationally, thanks to various international treaties. I am also certified under California law for general (non-IP) law within California. However, for non-IP issues, I will usually refer you to another specialist.

What are your firm's strengths and style?

I was a client of law firms for years before I became an attorney. I still think like a client and try to keep your interests in mind. This includes being respectful of your time and budget and trying for a high level of legal and technical competence. I strive for transparent, no surprises, billing, and an honest assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of any given IP project. I also try for a reasonably fast turn-around and to be available for questions when needed.

Stephen E. Zweig

I started my career in biotech/medical-device/medical-electronics research and development. My past positions include academics (assistant professor), large corporations (R&D director, LifeScan, a Johnson and Johnson company), and startups (founder and CTO, Avocet Medical Inc., a VC-funded medical electronics startup).

In addition to academic medical research, I also have experience managing moderately complex electronics and software projects. My earlier experience also includes writing and obtaining grants, writing business plans, and obtaining VC funding.

As I moved into management, I became more involved in intellectual property and legal issues. I went back to law school and obtained my JD. I have been working as a full-time patent attorney since 2012.
