How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

We are daily guided by our founding principles of passion for our work, pride in performance, and gratitude for being able to do what we do. Early on we learned that these traits, in the arena of family law, served our clients well.

What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others?

We strive to be experts in each civil area of the family court, so that we are well versed and prepared to advise our clients on any family law matter which may arise. We have experience as custody evaluators, guardian ad litems, mediators, and settlement masters, and this puts us in position to understand how each of the various parts fits within the whole, and to advise our clients so as to know what to expect. By focusing our practice exclusively on family law matters, we are better able to stay aware of changes in law, judicial policy, social science, and trends in child support, spousal support, and visitation issues.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

We are focused on results, and have put in the time, training, and work, to understand the "big picture." This allows us to push our cases to to an outcome that will not only give our client short term satisfaction, but also long term success.

Justin Sturdivant

Smith & Sturdivant, LLLC

Principle Attorney & Managing Partner

I am proud of my work as a Family Law attorney.

My practice is focused on family law matters, and I work hard to ensure that I have a full and well-rounded understanding of each of the different types of cases handled by the family court, so that I am prepared to capably assist my clients no matter the circumstance. In particular, I regularly handle every type of case involving custody, support, and property division.

My prior experiences as a general Civil Litigator as well as my on-going experience as a Mediator give me valuable insight into the family court process. Likewise, my training and experience as a Custody Evaluator and Guardian Ad Litem inform my understanding of custody and visitation issues.

I have handled many cases involving members of the military, as well as cases involving parties residing in different states, so that I am current in my understanding and application of the policies and rules related to jurisdiction and venue, including application of the UCCJEA and UIFSA.

I was born and raised in south Texas. I graduated with B.A. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 2002. Following graduation I moved to Honolulu to attend school at the University of Hawaii, and graduated with a J.D. in 2005. We formed Smith & Sturdivant, LLLC in 2005.

I am married with three children. I have been a coach for the Special Olympics since 2002, and consider myself privileged to have such an extended Ohana.
