Firm Overview

I have been an attorney for over twenty years. I limit my practice to the areas of plaintiff's personal injury, family law, probate and real estate. Few events in life cause as much anguish as that which comes with the breakdown of family relationships. Setting aside emotions clearly to consider future needs and direction is difficult; navigating the maze of laws, court rules and legal terminology can make the situation seem impossible. I help each client with clear explanations and frank advice. My practice includes the following:

• Dissolution of Marriage (including complex financial, business and property issues)
• Legal Separations
• Domestic Partnerships (living together for an extended period of time)
• Child Custody (including complex child custody issues)
• Paternity actions
• Modifications of Parenting Plans
• Review of Pre-nuptial agreements
• Wills, probate of estates, living wills and powers of attorney
• Other related family law matters

I began my practice in Snohomish County in 1990, shortly after leaving active duty in the U.S. Navy. May 15, 1991, I began my solo practice, which I incorporated in 1996. The firm continues at 3102 Rockefeller Avenue, Everett, Washington, where I initially began my private practice.

Example cases

Recently, I completed a collaborative divorce where the parties were married for over 30 years, had a marital estate approaching eight digits with a variety LLC's, multiple real estate holdings and several businesses. As well, these parents wanted to continue provision for their adult children.

My litigation cases cover everything from successful multi-day trials for change of custody to fathers, to arbitrations for child support modification to family law motions practice for dissolutions of marriage with children of all ages, maintenance and asset division.

I represent clients who earn in excess of $250,000 per year and clients who are struggling to earn $12,000 per year.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

Losing a primary relationship is devastating and it is a time when folks definitely need help. Giving folks help and working with them to find the options that may not always be clear, is both intellectually challenging and emotionally rewarding.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

This is something I encourage and try to help all of my clients to do. The more you know about the range of possibilities and what the law provides, the better able you will be to make informed decisions about how to proceed in your own case.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I will do this and encourage all clients to list their questions and concerns so that we are certain to address all of them when we meet. I will review documents for clients who wish to represent themselves.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am willing to offer advice and assistance to folks who want to be their own advocates.

I commenced my law practice in Minnesota after graduation from Hamline University School of Law (St. Paul, MN.) I practiced law in Minnesota from 1980 to 1983 in practice with Harry N. Ray, a general practice which emphasized criminal defense, family law, probate and personal injury matters. From 1983 through 1989, I served in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General Corps (JAGC) at duty stations and on ships both overseas and in the U.S. Following my service, I was placed upon the Naval Reserve retired list.

Living abroad and traveling extensively showed me that there is no single way to do things. The reality is that we all are much more alike than different. I also learned to be patient, to observe, to listen and to pay attention to details.

I listen well, anticipate problems, and give my clients accurate assessments of their range of options. I thoroughly discuss the pros and cons of each option choice and give unvarnished recommendations on how to arrive at realistic outcomes.

Personal interests:

I actively enjoy and help teach scuba diving (PADI Assistant Instructor) and play duplicate bridge (ACBL Silver Life Master, multiple Blue Ribbons Pairs qualifications). Daily walks with my Cairn and West Highlands Terriers.
