Richardson, Patrick, Westbrook & Brickman, LLC

RPWB's mesothelioma lawyers have been helping asbestos victims since 1976 when we were among the first in the country to successfully hold asbestos companies liable for causing mesothelioma. We have collected more than $1 billion for our clients.

Firm Overview

RPWB is a national plaintiff law firm with locations in Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Barnwell, Columbia and Aiken, South Carolina, and Edwardsville, Illinois. We serve asbestos victims throughout the United States by coming to you in your time of need rather than having you come to one of our offices.

In 1976, RPWB founding member Terry Richardson was one of the first mesothelioma lawyers in the country to successfully hold asbestos manufacturers liable at trial for the harm they caused. In the years prior to that trial win, he felt so strongly in the cause of helping people hurt by asbestos that he and another attorney took out personal loans to fund the litigation.

US News & World Report lists RPWB as a 2019 Best Law Firm. Sixteen of our attorneys were named to the 2019 Best Lawyers in America list, making us the top-rated product liability and mass tort law firm in South Carolina. For the past five years, The Legal 500 has named RPWB as one of the top six law firms in the United States for asbestos litigation and other toxic torts. Many of our attorneys have been recognized by Super Lawyers as being among the best in their practice areas.

Our mesothelioma lawyers have extensive experience working on cases involving all types of asbestos products and have amassed a wealth of knowledge about the specific products used at major jobsites around the country. In addition to highly-qualified asbestos lawyers, RPWB works with many of the leading medical and occupational experts needed to build the strongest case possible on your behalf.

When a person is diagnosed with mesothelioma, difficult decisions about treatment and the future must be made. Our compassionate and knowledgeable staff stands with you as your legal counselors and advisors during this journey. We will help you and your family through this very difficult chapter of your life as we gather information about your mesothelioma diagnosis, determine who is responsible for the asbestos that caused it and handle your legal claims from start to finish.

RPWB’s mesothelioma lawyers have helped asbestos victims since 1976 when we were among the first in the country to successfully hold asbestos companies liable for causing mesothelioma. For 40 years, our mesothelioma lawyers have helped asbestos victims in nearly every U.S. state and territory.

We will help you and your family through this very difficult chapter of your life as we gather information about your mesothelioma diagnosis, determine who is responsible for the asbestos that caused it and handle your legal claims from start to finish. Give us a call for a no-obligation case review and to have your questions answered by an experienced asbestos attorney.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

While we are known as a top product liability law firm and we do lead national cases against the country's largest corporations, RPWB is first and foremost an asbestos law firm. For the past 40 years, we have helped people who suffer from mesothelioma and other asbestos-related cancer in nearly every state and U.S. territory. It is the backbone of our practice, and we take great pride in helping hardworking Americans in their time of need.

Our firm's founding member, Terry Richardson, was among the first attorneys in the country to hold asbestos manufacturers liable for the mesothelioma they caused. It took many years, lots of resources and a whole lot of hard work to get to that point. In fact, Mr. Richardson, who was then a young lawyer, felt so strongly about the cause that he took out a personal loan to fund the work. It paid off. We have recovered more than a billion dollars for asbestos victims throughout the country.

Over the past 40 years, we have amassed a wealth of information and data about the country's major jobsites where people were exposed and the asbestos products used at each one. With a powerful network of scientific and occupational experts, we are able to build strong cases on our client's behalf in order to maximize compensation. Give us a call and our experienced asbestos attorneys and compassionate, knowledgeable staff will evaluate your situation and give you honest answers to all of your questions so you can make an informed decision.

What are your firm's strengths and style?

Our style follows the Golden Rule: We treat others the way we would like to be treated.

We care deeply about our clients. You should expect the undivided attention of your asbestos lawyer. We know that every case is unique. We treat each case and client as a top priority.

We are honest and straight forward in all of our dealings. We will tailor our approach to the needs and wishes of our clients, whether that is justice with an iron fist or a swift resolution with minimal legal proceedings.

Contrary to television advertisements you may have seen, there are not giant pots of money that you are automatically entitled to. Getting what you deserve requires putting together a comprehensive account of your work history, asbestos exposure and medical situation. An asbestos attorney must be ready to go to trial in order to secure the settlements you deserve.

You will meet our attorneys face-to-face in a setting that is comfortable for you. You will be able to reach us 24-7 with any questions or concerns you have. We will listen to you and provide the very best legal counsel possible. We will use our 40+ years of experience to help asbestos victims and their families achieve a strong financial foundation to fun treatment and leave a legacy to loved ones.

Put us to the test. Give us a call and we will gladly assess your situation and show you why we have been trusted by thousands of clients in their times of need.

Ken Wilson

Richardson, Patrick, Westbrook & Brickman, LLC

Kenneth J. Wilson's legal career is focused on helping workers who have suffered from mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses.

He grew up near the Rust Belt city of Youngstown, Ohio, where he was exposed to the blue-collar work ethic and the power of law. His grandfather was a judge, his grandmother was charter member of a nurse's union and his father worked with the area'™s steel industry.

In law school, Wilson was in the first class of summer law clerks at Ness, Motley, Loadholt, Richardson & Poole, where he worked with the lawyers who pioneered asbestos and tobacco litigation. He jokes that the firm had too much invested in him not to give him a job, but the truth is that he was a perfect fit for the fast-paced litigation.

The firm hired him right after law school, putting him to work building liability cases against large asbestos companies, preparing cases for trial and assisting with the trials. Within two years, he was co-lead attorney on the case of a Miami tile setter who suffered from asbestosis. The jury returned a $716,000 verdict.

The most rewarding and meaningful aspect of his job is that he gets to help people who worked hard their entire lives only to find their retirement cut short due to the negligence and willful misconduct of asbestos manufacturers and large employers.

Wilson also enjoys meeting people with fascinating backgrounds. He is proud and honored to represent men and women who worked to win wars and help build the United States.

Wilson is married and has two children in college. He is an avid runner, swimmer and reader of classic literature. He enjoys golf.

Butler is a 1993 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of law and holds an undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Florida State University. He began representing mesothelioma and other asbestos victims in 1993.

As a young lawyer, Butler spent months at a time combing through company records to build asbestos liability cases against manufacturers and employers on behalf of individuals who were exposed. Since then, he has helped thousands of asbestos victims from a variety of occupational backgrounds throughout the United States. He joined RPWB when the firm was founded in 2002.

With a depth of knowledge about occupational hazards and job sites throughout the United States, Butler is committed to providing his clients with personal attention, compassion and understanding as he builds the best possible case on their behalf to seek adequate compensation for medical treatments and the pain and suffering they endure. Born and raised in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Butler studied engineering before law school and uses his technical background to benefit his clients in complicated products liability and toxic tort cases. Karl Novak

Richardson, Patrick, Westbrook & Brickman, LLC

RPWB asbestos attorney Karl Novak has devoted nearly 30 years to putting together compelling cases on behalf of workers who developed cancer and lung disease as a result of asbestos exposure.

Novak is sensitive to the wishes of his clients and adjusts his approach accordingly. Whether that is a quick, painless resolution, justice with an iron fist or something in between, Novak puts his clients and their needs first.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Novak was the first in his family to attend college. He worked his way through school in the steel industry, and has devoted his entire career to representing mesothelioma and other asbestos-exposure victims. He moved to South Carolina in 1989 to work for Ness, Motley, Loadholt, Richardson & Poole, and joined RPWB as a founding member in 2002.

Novak has represented tens of thousands of asbestos victims throughout the United States. With an avid interest in genealogy and oral history, he compiles documents and interviews his client, family members, co-workers, physicians and experts to tell the story of where the exposure took place, who is responsible and what impact the disease will have on the victim and their family.

Novak has two grown children. When they were younger, he enjoyed coaching their baseball and soccer teams, including one special team that went undefeated for three straight seasons. He splits his time between South Carolina and Maine, and spends a lot of time on the road working with his clients.
