How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

With over twenty years of combined legal experience, attorneys Nik Chawla and Kristin Lamar founded the New Chapter Law Group in 2011 with one goal in mind, helping individuals and families with their legal needs WITHOUT losing sight of our clients as people, each with individualized personal needs! Over a decade later, as our practice areas grew, our slogan STILL rings true! We still work tirelessly to "Help clients Start Fresh and Move Forward WITH Confidence!" To learn more about Nik and Kristin, your Bankruptcy or Debt Resolution options, or our Wills, Trusts, and Estate Planning services call us today! You can also visit our website or email us to schedule your Free Initial Attorney Consultation with us!

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

Unlike most "cookie cutter" law firms, we NEVER marginalize our clients. Many times, big firms, "process" their clients by shuffling clients between salesmen, legal assistants, or untrained staff. We've dedicated ourselves to never losing sight of our clients as people, unlike the big firms who see their clients just as another case number, and not as a person. We KNOW our clients are people... People struggling to keep up with overwhelming debts... people faced with the difficult decisions before them!... people trying to find help they can count on! We do our best to give each and every client as much time and attention as they need and deserve, and also keep them informed and aware of their options at every stage of their legal journey!

Is your firm willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?

Yes, if you are currently in an active bankruptcy which was either filed by you (pro-per) or by another attorney, we can be (and have) 'substituted' into an existing case, in order to help you conclude your case with us as your attorneys. If you feel we may be able to help you, please call or email us today for a Free Initial Attorney Consultation!

New Chapter Law Group
Nikhil ("Nik") Chawla

Hi there! My name is Nik Chawla (though my full first name is Nikhil). I'm a native San Diegan, and long-time resident of North County San Diego. With family roots deeply planted in San Diego, I attended the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). My love of biology and passion for helping people resulted in a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry & Cell Biology.

After graduating from UCSD, I worked for local biotech and internet start-up companies, which is where I found my passion for the law. Rather than going on to medical school, I decided to attend Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, where I excelled in legal writing and research. Still driven to help others, I initially worked for a boutique family law firm in Carlsbad, which utilized a "Collaborative Approach" to divorce cases.

After assisting clients with their family law issues, I began helping clients get financial fresh starts in their lives by filing Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcies. Since 2009 my legal focus has been set exclusively on bankruptcy and debt resolution. Together with my partner Kristin Lamar we've filed approximately 3000 consumer bankruptcies, including Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases. I've also argued on behalf of my clients before the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel ("BAP") of the Ninth Circuit. I'm currently admitted to practice law in California and the United States Bankruptcy Courts of the Southern, Central, and Northern Districts of California.

Kristin Lamar

Hello! My name is Kristin Lamar, and I was born and raised in San Diego. I attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where I received a Bachelor of Arts in History. I knew from an early age that I wanted to be an attorney, and after college, I moved to New York to work and study law. I wanted to be an attorney to help people.

Before attending Brooklyn Law School, I worked for several New York law firms which specialized in the field of corporate bankruptcy. Because I enjoyed corporate bankruptcy, I continued to work while attending law school, and I also studied bankruptcy law.

Since starting work in consumer bankruptcy, my partner Nik Chawla and I have filed approximately 3000 consumer bankruptcies, including Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases. I like to think that both my clients and colleagues know me to be straight forward and direct, and always willing to fight for my clients!

Even though I'm licensed and practice primarily in California, I am also licensed to practice law in New York. I'm also admitted to the United States Bankruptcy Courts for the Central, Northern, and Southern Districts of California, the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
