The building, which was constructed circa 1890 and expanded circa 1936, was for many years the Columbia location for Sears, Roebuck & Co. until it moved from downtown in the mid-1950's. In 1984 the firm completely renovated the building, which is a unique example of neoclassical Adam-style architecture in Columbia, similar to the high-style architecture of historic Charleston.
