What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

As a life-long student, we believe that an educated client is a loyal client. Talking to clients in legalese only serves to boost the attorney's ego but confuses the client who is already worried about his or her legal issue. WE WILL do these for you: 1) Always answer or return your calls within reason;
2) Listen, ask questions, and request documents to prove your side;
3) Evaluate your needs with compassion and empathy;
4) Speak in simple language (preferably the one you are comfortable with);
5) Provide REAL value for your fees (not squeeze you for more after we agreed in
our agreement unless additional work, time, or expertise is necessary);
6) Diligently work to achieve the result you intend to get (or the best result given
your set of facts and applicable law) within the bounds of the Law, Procedure,
and Ethics;
7) Protect your Confidentiality above anything;
8) Answer your questions (even those not related to the case you hired us to do);
9) Offer you Options to choose in order to move forward with your case, and;
10). Complete the job you paid us to do and do the same to the people you refer us.
The above promises are not guarantees of any result but our response to the chasm that inevitably exists between the attorney and their client especially after the client pays their fees to the attorney.

EDWIN A. BARNUM, Esq.

Edwin Antigua Barnum (born April 11, 1958) is an American licensed attorney and real estate broker in the State of California, specializing in handling civil law such as probate, bankruptcy, immigration, and personal injury cases.[1] Before moving to the United States and becoming a naturalized citizen, he was born and grew up in the Philippines and obtained his undergraduate degree there, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Philippine Military (0-117025).

EARLY LIFE EDUCATION
Barnum was born to the late Antonio Aliviado Barnum and Lucia Del Castillo Antigua in Cebu, Philippines. After graduating high school, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Criminology from the University of the Visayas in 1980. He was the Corps Commander of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) in the University of the Visayas in 1980 and went on the be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Philippine Constabulary and was called to active duties.
Barnum followed his father to the United States in 1983 and settled in Long Beach, California. He married his college sweetheart, the former Laura Getutua Togonon who joined him in the United States and together raised a family in Cypress and La Palma, California. He has two children Geraldine Barnum Aguirre and Terence James Barnum, and is a grandfather to Mya Gizelle Vibar Barnum[7] and Kayden Barnum Aguirre.[2] In 1986, he received his California Department of Real Estate license and worked in real estate part-time, and in 1990 opened a Century 21 real estate franchise (Century 21 Legacy) in Gardena California where he recruited and trained real estate agents until 2009.

CAREER
After serving the Philippine Constabulary as a 2nd Lieutenant, Barnum immigrated to the United States and diligently worked as an insurance agent, unarmed security guard, nurse’s aide, and the U.S. Postal worker while doing real estate sales after working eight hours at night at Long Beach General Mail Facility.
A good follower and an even better leader with his example, Barnum pursued his life-long ambition of becoming a lawyer and graduated from the University of West Los Angeles (UWLA) School of Law and earned Juris Doctorate[2] that enabled him to sit for the California Bar Exam (CBX).
He began his career as an attorney after passing the California Bar exam in 2009.[3] Realizing the rigors of running a full-service Century 21 real estate brokerage and serving his clients as an attorney, Barnum opted to close his real estate franchise and opened his own law firm. Not a stranger to hard work, Barnum maintains his real estate broker license active[4] and practices law as a solo practitioner, specializing in Civil Law with emphasis on probate, bankruptcy, immigration, and personal injury cases. Barnum’s law firm serves the poor and underprivileged and lives by the slogan “Helping ‘tip’ the balance of justice in your favor.”[5]
Barnum serves clients in Torrance, Gardena Carson, Long Beach, and South Los Angeles areas through The Law Offices of Edwin A. Barnum, PC.[6] He is a member of the California Bar, United States District Court, and Central District. Barnum is a budding author and would like to one day publish a book about legal issues and immigrants’ life in the United States.
