Brien earned his bachelor's degree in history at the University of Cincinnati in 1992. Upon the completion of undergraduate studies, he moved on to obtain his Master's Degree in Education at Xavier University. While in graduate school, he worked as a teacher during the day and at Bethesda North Hospital at night.
Brien attended the University of Cincinnati College of Law after deciding to leave teaching. While there, he completed a year-long internship with the Hamilton County Office of the Public Defender. He also won UC's coveted Federal Bar Association John W. Peck Trial Practice Award. After graduating from law school, Brien passed the bar examinations for both Ohio and Kentucky within his first year. He is also admitted in the United States District Court, Southern District of Ohio.
Brien is an Ironman finisher, an avid reader, an exercise junkie, and a lifelong learner.
