David W. Kirch

Mr. Kirch is the founding and managing partner of Kirch Rounds Bowman & Deffenbaugh PC and has concentrated his practice in the areas of estate planning, probate, trust administration, and probate litigation for over 40 years. Kirch Rounds Bowman & Deffenbaugh PC was named a Tier 1 firm in Colorado Metro Rankings for both Trusts and Estates Law and Elder Law by U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” for 2021. Mr. Kirch has been a lecturer on trusts and estates at the University of Denver Law School. He earned his B.A. degree, summa cum laude, from California Lutheran College and his J.D. degree from the University of Colorado where he was a member of The Order of the Coif. Mr. Kirch has been co-editor of the Estate and Trust Forum of the Colorado Lawyer since 1998. He is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Mr. Kirch is past chairman of the Trust and Estate Section of the Colorado Bar Association and past chairman of the Statutory Revisions Committee of the Probate and Trust Section of the Colorado Bar Association. He served as the liaison between the Real Estate Section of the Colorado Bar Association and the Trust and Estate Section of the Colorado Bar Association from 2009 to 2019. Mr. Kirch is listed in the 2023 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the areas of Elder Law and Trusts and Estates and is listed in the 2021 edition of Super Lawyers Magazine under Estate Planning and Probate.

Charles Rounds

Mr. Rounds is a partner at the law office of Kirch Rounds Bowman & Deffenbaugh PC in Aurora, Colorado where his primary emphasis of practice has been in estate and trust administration and estate planning, including wills, power of attorneys, and living wills. Other areas of his practice include guardianships, conservatorships, Medicaid planning, use of Family Limited Partnerships and LLCs for planning purposes, preparation of 1041s, 706s, and 709s, real estate, and probate litigation. Mr. Rounds earned his B.A. degree from Georgetown University, College of Arts and Sciences, and his J.D. degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Mr. Rounds is a member of the Trust and Estate section and the Real Estate section of the Colorado Bar Association and a member of the Denver Bar Association. Mr. Rounds is the Colorado Bar Association Trust and Estate Section Liaison to the Colorado Bar Association Real Estate Section (2019 – Present). Mr. Rounds is co-editor of Loring and Rounds A Trustee's Handbook (2008 – 2021 Editions). He was listed as a Rising Star in Super Lawyers Magazine under Estate Planning & Probate in 2016. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, in the field of Trusts and Estates (Recognized since 2017) and in the field of Elder Law (Recognized since 2018). Mr. Rounds was co-author, with Emily L. Bowman, of Five Common Client Misconceptions about Estate Planning, Vol.47, No. 11, in the December 2018 Colorado Lawyer. Mr. Rounds has been a faculty member at several programs in the areas of Estate Planning and Estate Administration, including “Introduction to Ethics in Estate Planning”, sponsored by the Colorado Bar Association Continuing Legal Education, on January 31, 2020. He has also presented on Real Estate Trust & Estate Forms during “The 15-Minute Drill” Series at the 2021 Real Estate Symposium, sponsored by the Colorado Bar Association Continuing Legal Education on July 15, 2021. Mr. Rounds is the author of “A Discussion of the Trust and Estate Related Real Estate Practitioner Forms Published in The Green Book,” which was published in the Fall 2022 edition of the Colorado Bar Association, Trust & Estate Section, Council Notes publication.

Emily Bowman

Emily L. Bowman became a partner with Kirch Rounds Bowman & Deffenbaugh PC in January of
2018 where her practice has been focused in Estate Planning, Estate Administration, Elder Law, Tax Planning, Conservatorships, and Guardianships. In 2019, she became Co-Editor of the Trust and Estate Section of The Colorado Lawyer. She is listed in the Super Lawyers Magazine as a Rising Star under Estate Planning and Probate since 2020. She is also listed in The Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch since 2021 in the field of Trusts and Estates and Elder Law. Mrs. Bowman is a member of the Colorado Bar Association Trust and Estate Section, the Denver Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. She is co-author of Equitable Remedies, Orange Book Handbook: Colorado Estate Planning Handbook (2018 – Present). Mrs. Bowman authored an article on The SECURE Act and its impact on estate planning with retirement accounts in the Colorado Lawyer in 2020. Mrs. Bowman graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in May 2009. In 2013, she graduated in the Top 3% of her class at the University of Oregon School of Law, where she was a member of The Order of the Coif and received the Laurence Janssen School of Law Academic Scholarship.

Gerard Deffenbaugh

Mr. Deffenbaugh’s practice is focused in Estate Planning, Estate Administration, and Trust Administration. He joined the firm in 2017 and became a partner in 2019. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Deffenbaugh practiced at Bryan Cave LLP (now Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP) for three years.
Mr. Deffenbaugh has co-authored articles published in the Colorado Lawyer including on trust interests in divorce proceedings. In addition, he has presented at continuing legal education programs on various topics.
Mr. Deffenbaugh is listed in Super Lawyers Magazine as a Rising Star since 2021 under Estate Planning and Probate. Mr. Deffenbaugh is listed in The Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch since 2021 in the fields of Trusts and Estates and Elder Law.
Mr. Deffenbaugh is a Texas native. He earned his undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 2010, and he earned his J.D. degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 2014. Outside of the office, he enjoys hiking trails, experimenting in the kitchen, reading, and spending quality time with family and friends.
