Biography
R. Scott Smith was born on June 30, 1947 in Washington, D.C., and raised in Metropolitan St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Christian Brothers Military College. It was during these early years that he performed mammary cancer research under a Ford Foundation Grant to the Washington University School of Medicine, Department of Surgery. During his law school tenure, he taught graphic arts in the School of Journalism. Smith's first post-graduate employment was with The Missouri Bar as Field Director of the Citizenship Education Program. He authored and edited books, television shows and newsletters and shepherded an in-service education program in conjunction with the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Education and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The program was designed to teach teachers how to teach the basic tenets of law to children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. In 1976, Smith came to Kansas City to become law clerk to a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals-Western District. Thereafter, he joined a small plaintiff's litigation firm. He soon moved to a fast-growing insurance defense firm, where he practiced for nearly eight years. During this period he participated in the International Association of Insurance Counsel Trial Academy in Boulder, Colorado and attended the University of Miami Medical Institute for Attorneys-- Orthopedics & Rehabilitation in Miami Beach, Florida. He resigned his partnership position as a lead trial attorney and became counsel to the firm of Birmingham & Furry in 1984. Smith joined the re-named partnership of Birmingham, Furry & Smith in 1986. In 1991 he became managing partner. Throughout his professional life Smith has represented individuals, insurers, insureds and self-insureds in automobile liability, product liability, personal injury, fire and casualty, speedometer rollback, E.E.O.C., financial institution liability cases and bad faith insurance litigation in Missouri and Kansas. He has represented manufacturers in multi-district litigation and represents manufacturers, re-sellers and premises owners in toxic tort multi-party cases in which there are as many as two hundred plaintiffs. Smith has written and lectured locally and nationally on topics as varied as The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship in a Free Society and Vexatious Refusal/Bad Faith Litigation. He had achieved the highest rating for legal ability in Martindale-Hubbell before age 40 and was first named to Who's Who in American Law in 1989 and Who's Who in the World in 1995. He is a member of Defense Research Institute.
