Herb Franks grew up on a dairy farm in Marengo, Illinois. And as a young man working early and long hours milking cows, he knew he wanted more out of life.
He became a lawyer but never forgets his roots. Franks Gerkin McKenna, the law firm he started, is actually located on that same farmland where Herbert used to milk cows.
Herb began his law career in 1961, and was a partner in a law firm in Rockford, Illinois. He won the first million dollar jury verdict in McHenry County. After winning this case and others, he opened his first office in Marengo. His legacy in McHenry County is distinguished and undeniable. He was the only president of the Illinois State Bar Association to come out of McHenry County.
Law is in his blood, and it is a tradition that has continued in his family. All three of his sons, David, Jack, and Eli, have law degrees, Jack being a partner here at Franks Gerkin McKenna.
Jack D. Franks wanted to be an attorney since he was ten years old. He always admired his father Herb's profession, but it wasn't until he read the biography of Clarence Darrow that he set his sights on the legal profession. He was so moved by the famous lawyer's biography he even gave himself the middle name, "Darrow."
At the end of the day, being a lawyer was the position in which he thought he could help the most people and ultimately do the most good. His favorite part of being an attorney is helping people, but even more so helping them stand up for their rights to ensure they get what they are entitled to. As an attorney at Franks Gerkin McKenna, he sincerely values his ability to level the playing field and fight against strenuous odds.
When he works with a client, he looks at the case as if it were his own. He does everything in his power to make sure his clients get what they deserve.
Jack has a background in multinational and commercial litigation as well as extensive federal court experience, both of which support his practice in personal injury law, complex commercial litigation, and general business law. Jack also serves as Chairman of the State Bank Group which consists of 8 community banks in McHenry County.
When Peggy Gerkin graduated with her undergraduate degree from Illinois State University, she took a year off to work. It is while working for a well-known worker's compensation lawyer in Peoria that she decided she wanted to be a trial attorney. She sincerely enjoyed the work back then, and sincerely enjoys it now.
Peggy has been with Franks Gerkin McKenna for 25 years. Before joining the firm, she worked as an Assistant State's Attorney with the Boone County State's Attorney's Office. Within the first year there, she became lead prosecutor and a trial attorney assigned to the felony and juvenile courts.
An accomplished trial attorney, Peggy is especially effective in matters of family law, personal injury, workers' compensation, and criminal defense. She is also one of the few female attorneys to ever defend a person facing the death penalty.
Peggy is extremely passionate about protecting the rights of her clients, especially when they are children. She believes that children need an advocate more than anyone else.
She is also dedicated to her active involvement in the legal community. She has served a total of four years as the President of the Boone County Bar Association. She prepared the IRS documents to create CASA, a non-profit organization in Boone County protecting the abused and neglected children.
