What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Education is the key to empowerment. I encourage clients to be involved in the process and teach them about the legal process and the substantive areas of the law so they can actively participate in the process as a partner. Family Law necessarily deals with personal issues. My clients are the experts regarding their personal issues, but may not be able to distinguish between relevant evidence and irrelevant facts. Educating themselves will help them focus on the important issues which, in turn, helps them save time and money.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Yes. I am a legal writing expert. Clients who prepare their own documents may help reduce the time it takes me to get simple information from them. On the other hand, I still spend time reviewing all important issues to make sure they are not leaving anything out.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Yes. I have several clients who keep me on retainer so that they can send emails and call me when they need coaching. I review and edit their documents, perform research, create form documents for them, and educate them on the process and the law. This is a good way to save money and keep costs to a minimum.

How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?

We use mediation in almost all cases (that do not settle on their own). Regardless, I am a trained mediator and collaborative lawyer, and I often use the same techniques in negotiating settlements even when we do not engage in a formal process.

What are your firm's strengths and style?

We work very hard to obtain desired results. We are very honest with our clients regarding the law, the likelihood of success, the time it will take to achieve the desired results, the cost of the process, the emotional toll it may have, and the strategy involved. We are down to earth and friendly and build long term relationships. We always strive to ensure clients are satisfied with our services.

Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?

On occasion, we provide pro bono legal services depending on the circumstances. Tamar Faulhaber currently volunteers with the Forsyth County PAC helping parents who are behind on their child support and with International Custody Cases.

What are your policies about dividing work within the firm to make the process most cost-effective for the client?

We engage staff in performing tasks they are trained to do to keep costs down, but the assigned attorney always monitors the work done. For example, we have staff organize documents, perform filing, and draft simple documents.
