Mr. Farrell founded the law firm of Hugh W. Farrell & Associates in May of 1991, which, in 2007, became Farrell & Gunderson. Previously he had been a partner for four years with the law firm of Boyland & Thompson. He began his legal career as an associate attorney with the civil litigation firm of Welch, Murphy & Welch in 1984. Prior to his being admitted to the bar he worked for ten years for the Hartford Insurance Company in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Eight of those ten years he worked in a management level for civil litigation cases insured by The Hartford Insurance Company. At that time the Hartford Insurance Company provided professional liability insurance coverage for physician members of the Medical Society for the District of Columbia. The Hartford also provided coverage for many of the hospitals located in the District of Columbia. Mr. Farrell spent a substantial amount of his time supervising and managing cases in litigation involving health care providers and organizations. Mr. Farrell has received an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell that reflects the evaluation of judges and other attorneys that his legal ability rating is very high to preeminent.

He also has represented hospitals before the probate division of the courts on intervention proceedings for appointment of guardians and conservators for incapacitated individuals.

Mr. Farrell has also lectured staff physicians, resident physicians and the nursing staff on various subjects involving risk management. He has spoken before insurance company groups and claim association organizations on the subject of insurance coverage and legal claim issues. He has given lectures to business and professional groups on risk management issues involving employment law, professional liability issues and general litigation.
