Protecting your Rights, Telling your story, and advocating for only you.
Criminal Defense is one of the most important areas of law and is many things. It is the front lines for protecting people's individual rights. It is advocating for those who are in one of the most difficult situations of their lives. It is fighting when your opponent has all the powers of the state behind them. You deserve an attorney who understands that every case is important and will fight for you like they were fighting for themselves.
Harold Downer, the founding attorney at Downer Law PLLC, began practicing criminal law as a "student attorney" for the public defender's office in 2012 as a law student. Doing so, he discovered his passion for protecting peoples rights and helping them through one of the most challenging parts of their lives. That enjoyment of helping people through difficult times (and preventing them) is what led him to other areas of law, such as estate planning, contract drafting, landlord/tenant and business formations.
Harold Downer cut his teeth in criminal defense in New Mexico--in one of the highest DUI areas in the country. He also was a prosecutor, so knows the issues and arguments from both sides.
Harold Downer was born and raised in the suburbs of Michigan. He moved out to New Mexico, without even having been west of the Mississippi River before, to practice law. That is the kind of dedication he will bring to your legal issue.
I was born and raised in Michigan. My parents sacrificed so my siblings and I could attend a small, private school in Taylor. After graduating, I attended Central Michigan University.
Since I was little, I wanted to be an attorney. After completing my undergraduate, I decided I needed to experience the real world and decide if law school was what I really wanted before investing 3 more years of my life. Unfortunately, that was also during the 2008 recession. Though I was able to have a great deal of fun, it was conducive to finding any sort of career.
I entered law school in 2009 and even convinced my best friend to join me in this endeavor. During my time there I met my wife, served as the Student Bar Association President, and was able to practice law as a student attorney at the Washtenaw Public Defenders Office.
After graduating, I found the legal market in Michigan to be tough to break into. After some time of searching, and working other jobs, I became determined to practice no matter what. I applied for jobs at every public defender's office in New Mexico. Receiving an offer in Farmington, NM, my wife and I jumped in head first and moved to a place we have never been, so I could do the job I loved.
New Mexico found a lot of unexpected life changes. First, I switched from criminal defense to prosecutiongaining invaluable skills and perspectives I can use now. Second, my marriage ended. After getting divorced I decided it was time to return home and follow my dream.
In law school, the happiest attorneys I met were solo and small firm attorneys. I never had big dreams of working for the government or practicing in a tall high-rise. My dream was to found my own firm, take the cases I wanted to take, and be my own boss. Now, that is exactly what I get to do by helping you.
