Green Card

We represent clients in green card applications

A Green Card application or Adjustment of Status refers to the process which permits foreign nationals legally already in the US, who are eligible to receive an immigrant visa and for whom immigrant visa number is immediately available, to apply for immigrant status. Individuals that qualify for adjustment of status are any foreign nationals in the US who meet the requirements of an I-485 petition through family, employment or asylum.

The family members of the foreign national also qualify for adjustment of status - such as spouses and foreign born unmarried children under the age of twenty-one. There are many advantages for an applicant eligible for an adjustment of status. First, the foreign national can maintain valid status in the U.S. while your Adjustment of Immigration Status application is being processed. Also, the foreign national can concurrently apply for AOS with immediate relative green card and employment-based first, second, and third categories. Also, an applicant who is denied AOS can appeal.

Overall, the fundamental benefit of the adjustment of status for a foreign national is that it is the final stage in receiving a green card. If you have any questions regarding the green card process please contact Ahmad & Akbar so that our experienced attorneys can assist you with your inquiries.

Permanent Residence

Michigan U.S. Citizenship Attorneys

At the Troy law offices of Ahmad & Akbar, Attorneys at Law, we strive for excellence for our clients in the fields of permanent residence and green card status, as only a client-committed, community-involved, energetic young law firm can.

When you need help with this aspect of immigration law, call on us. You can benefit from our experience, creative solutions, and client focus.

"Permanent Residency" Defined

A green card is usually the long-range goal of most noncitizens and can give the holder permanent resident status. It is the primary path to long-term employment prospects and acquiring the freedom to exit and return to our country. It allows you to get a Social Security number and receive all the other benefits that come with being a resident of the United States.

The seasoned, sensitive immigration lawyers of Ahmad & Akbar will thoroughly and carefully see you through the green card process, no matter which of several routes you choose: employment, family, or asylum or refugee status.

We will make sure you know about any deadlines involved and any required documents. Our years of immigration experience have brought us in contact with countless clients whose goal was permanent resident status followed by naturalization and citizenship. We can be of service to you too, effectively and cost-efficiently.

Applications and Appeals

Some of the available green card categories carry long waiting periods. If you are eligible to apply for permanent residence status in more than one of them, we can inform you of the pros and cons of each category. If an appeal of your application denial is necessary, we are glad to advocate for you in that forum and persuasively represent your interests.

I believe that my job as an attorney is to enrich my clients' lives and prepare them in the good times, so that they can get through the tough times with ease. Background and Education
When I began college I wanted to go into rehabilitative medicine and to that end I earned a B.S. and M.S. from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in Kinesiology. My area of focus was two-fold; 1) the effect of exercise on cancer (for which I also received a Certificate in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan's School of Public Health), and 2) the effect of changing visual stimuli in Parkinson's patients. However, after completing my M.S. I determined that I did not want to spend the rest of my life in academia and hospitals. I wanted to deal with people, and help them. To that end I then traveled to Boston where I received a CSS in Business Administration from Harvard University. After graduating from Harvard, I matriculated at the University of Wisconsin Madison's law school. The university's law school is famous for its "hands on" approach to teaching the law, and the belief that its students should be dedicated to helping make the world a better place. While at the University I focused my law school experience on small business law, family law, and litigation.

After graduation I returned to Michigan and began my practice. After 10 years of working for other people I determined that it was time to start my own practice. As a result Muneeb Ahmad and I began discussing what we would like our firm to be. The result is Ahmad & Akbar Law, PLLC. A small firm dedicated to the premise that an excellent full service law firm that provides cost effective services to normal, everyday, citizens is not only possible, but necessary; and that we were the ones capable of doing it.

I am currently licensed to practice in both Wisconsin and Michigan at the state level. At the federal level I am admitted to the Easter District of Michigan, the Western District of Wisconsin, the Northern District of Ohio, and the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Our firm practices in all areas of immigration law. From family immigration to business immigration to deportation and removal defense we represent our clients with expertise and care.
