How do I keep my Quicken WillMaker Plus current and up to date?
To keep up to date, periodically run Quicken WillMaker Plus's "Web Update" feature by starting the program and selecting Online > Web Update. You must be connected to the Internet to use Web Update.

How can I tell which version of Quicken WillMaker Plus I have?
Start Quicken WillMaker Plus and select Help > About Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009 to see the version number. To see version info for specific program files, click the Version... button.
If you can't get the program running, use "My Computer" to go to the Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009 program folder and locate the file named QWP.EXE. Right click the file, select Properties, and click the Version tab, where the version is listed.

Why doesn't anything happen when I put the Quicken WillMaker Plus CD into my CD-ROM drive?
After you insert the Quicken WillMaker Plus Installation CD into your CD-ROM drive, setup should launch automatically. If it doesn't, do the following.
If you run Windows 2000 or XP:

Choose Start > Run.

Type D:\AUTORUN (you may have to substitute the letter of your CD-ROM drive for "D").

Click OK.
If you run Windows Vista:

Choose Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run.

Major Documents
Will
- Allows you to leave your pet to a trusted caretaker, including an alternate, in case your first choice is unavailable. You can also leave the caretaker a gift of money with the request that it be used to care for your pet.
- Lets same-sex couples in California indicate whether they are married or in a registered domestic partnership.
Information for Caregivers and Survivors
- Lets you leave important information for those who will care for your pet when you no longer can, including food requirements, health concerns/medicines, veterinarians, exercise/activities, sleeping habits, grooming needs, and requests for memorializing your pet at the end of its life.
Additional Features
- The Spell Checker lets you automatically check the spelling of text you enter during document interviews.

I am upgrading to Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009. Do I need to uninstall the older version first?
No. Keep your old version of Quicken WillMaker until you have successfully converted and opened all your documents files with the 2009 version.
Before installing the new version, back up your Quicken WillMaker documents files on to a floppy disk, CD-ROM, or other external medium. Next, install Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009, start the program, and open your WillMaker documents files. Once a WillMaker documents file is opened and converted to the 2009 portfolio format, you will be unable to open it using an older version of the Quicken WillMaker.
When you first open a file created with an older version of Quicken WillMaker, a "Pre-2009 Documents.pfl" file is automatically created in your "Nolo Documents Backup" folder. This file can be helpful if you've signed or amended a living trust using a pre-2008 version of Quicken WillMaker (see below).
It's possible that some of the documents you created with the older version won't appear in the 2009 Document List. If a document is missing, we've either made substantial revisions to it or deleted it altogether. In addition, you may need to review document interviews you'd completed in previous versions before you can print out old document using Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009.

After upgrading to Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009, I can't access the trust document I previously created, signed, or amended. What can I do?
We simplified the process for amending living trusts in Quicken WillMaker Plus 2008. Trust documents created using a pre-2008 version of Quicken WillMaker should still be valid; however, you cannot access them with Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009.
To access your pre-2008 trust document, use the version of Quicken WillMaker that you created the trust with. Do not uninstall your older version of Quicken WillMaker.
If you've used Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009 to open the documents file containing your living trust, you'll need to:

Start your pre-2008 version of Quicken WillMaker Plus.

Choose File > Open Documents File.

Open your Nolo Documents Backup folder - located in "My Documents" (Windows 2000 and XP) or "Documents" (Windows Vista) folder.

Select and open the "Pre-2009 Documents of [your name].pfl" file that contains your original signed or amended trust.
From there you can continue work on your previously-created trust document.

After upgrading to Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009, I can't access my health care directive. What can I do?
In the 2007 version, we completely revised and improved the health care directives section:
- You can now create a full durable power of attorney for health care, naming someone to make all medical decisions for you if necessary.
- The living will document now allows you to specify even more detailed wishes for end-of-life health care.
Because of these changes, you won't be able to revise previously-created health care directives with pre-2007 versions of Quicken WillMaker. If you want to change the details of your older directive, you'll need to create a new one using Quicken WillMaker 2009.

In the 2008 version, we completely revised and improved the final arrangements. Because of these changes, you won't be able to revise previously-created final arrangements created with pre-2008 versions of the program. If you want to change the details of your older directive, you'll need to create a new one using Quicken WillMaker 2009.

I am having trouble using Web Update. What can I do?
If you are running Microsoft’s Windows Vista: Due to increased security measures in Windows Vista, when the update finishes you will see a User Access Control dialog. Click Continue or enter an administrator password as prompted.
If you use a firewall & security application and receive warnings, you'll need to "allow" or add "f1.nolo.com" to the trusted site list.
If, after adding f1.nolo.com to the trusted site list, you still are unable to complete the update, you may need to turn off your firewall program. Once the update is downloaded and installed, you can turn your firewall back on.
If you are a Windows XP Service Pack 2 user, the built-in Windows Firewall feature could prevent you from using Web Update. When you run Web Update, if you see a Windows Security Alert that asks whether you want to block or unblock your Quicken program's Internet connection, select "Unblock." Once you have unblocked the Quicken program, you should be able to download future Web Updates.
If you are trying to update behind a corporate proxy server and get various error messages, you won't be able to use Web Update. Web Update was designed for the home user with a basic firewall. Unfortunately, we cannot support Proxy Servers and other corporate VPN security configurations.

How can I see an example of a document before completing a document interview?
To see an example of a completed document:
- Use the "Document List" screen to select the document you want to create.
- At the bottom of the description (on the right side of the screen), find the underlined “View an example...” link and click it.
This will open a completed version of the document, using fictitious data. (Note that your actual customized document might look different, based on the interview answers you give.)

Can I print a blank document before completing a document interview?
No. Your Nolo software creates custom documents based on your responses to document interview questions. There is no blank template that can be printed. If you just want to see what a document looks like, you can view a document example (described above).

How can I print out a copy of a document without also printing the signing instructions?
To print a draft version without including signing instructions:

Follow the program's instructions on completing and printing a document.

At the "Print Preview" screen, click the Print icon. You'll then see a Print dialog box.

In the “Print signing instructions” box in the lower right of the Print dialog, select No.

Click OK to send the displayed document to your printer.
Exclude the signing instructions only if printing a draft copy. If it's the final version of a Quicken WillMaker document, print and read the signing instructions.

How can I open Quicken WillMaker documents in a word processor?
After you have completed your document, you can export it -- that is, save it as a text file. Once it's a text file, you can open it with a word processing program. Use this feature if you:
- are having problems printing directly from Quicken WillMaker
- want to view your document on a computer that doesn't have Quicken WillMaker installed on it.
We strongly discourage using your word processor to edit or change the wording of an exported document. If you alter a document, we cannot guarantee its legal validity.
To export your completed document:
- Display your completed document on the "Print Preview" screen.
- Click the Export icon at the left of the "Print Preview" screen.
- Click Continue at the prompt explaining why you shouldn't change the wording of the exported document. This opens the Export Document dialog box.
- Name the exported file.
- Select the file type for the exported document: either Rich Text Format (RTF) or ASCII Text (TXT). If your word processor can "read" RTF files -- and most do -- you should select that file type, as it contains more formatting.
- Click Save.
- Click Yes to open the exported file with your word processor.

Why won't the program allow me to arrange things exactly how I want in my estate planning documents?
Quicken WillMaker Plus enables most users to create legal documents that satisfy their needs without consulting a lawyer. There are complex situations, however, that are not handled by the program. The manual and program help include thorough explanations of estate planning laws; they also point out when your situation may require an expert's help.
If you want to include provisions in your estate planning documents that are not allowed by your software, take your unsigned document to a lawyer for fine tuning.

How can I reset my print options to the default settings?
While the program is running, select File > Print Options. Click the Use Defaults button to reset your print options.
Make sure that the margins are set as follows:
Top -- 0.75", Bottom -- 0.45", Left -- 1.25", Right -- 1.25".
The Line Spacing should be set to "Standard Spacing."
The "Footers in smaller type" and "Footer in bold type" checkboxes should be checked and the "Use only standard ASCII characters" checkbox should not be checked.
Click the Fonts button and make sure the Font is "Times New Roman", the Font Style is "Regular" and the Size is "12."

When I try to print one of my documents, why do I get strange characters, part of a page or nothing at all?
There can be several reasons for this.
Printer driver. You may have the wrong printer driver selected. Check your printer setup and go to your printer manufacturer's website to make sure you have the latest printer driver.
Interference by other software. Some programs alter the printer setup with special format commands or fail to reset a printer to its default settings when finished. Try resetting your printer by turning it off and on again before printing from Quicken WillMaker Plus.
Network printers. If your printer is part of a network, the network itself may have special commands. Your system administrator may need to alter some settings.

When I try to print or display documents, I get error messages or the program crashes/freezes. What can I do?
If you are having a printing problem, consult the "Troubleshooting" file that's installed with the program. Here are some other tips:
- Make sure you have the current version of your software by running Web Update. (For more on using Web Update, see "How do I keep Quicken WillMaker Plus current and up to date?," above).
- Get the latest printer driver. Make sure you have the current revision of your printer driver. Check your printer manufacturer's web site.
- The program's registry settings may be corrupt. Start the program while holding down the CTRL key. This will reset the program's registry settings to their default values.

How do I uninstall Quicken WillMaker Plus?
Before you uninstall, check that you have back-ups and/or printouts of your documents.
Choose Start > Programs/All Programs > Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009 > Uninstall Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009. If you cannot locate the uninstaller, try one of these methods:
- Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and follow the instructions on screen.
- Find the Quicken WillMaker Plus 2009 folder on your hard disk and delete it manually.
