This program predates the release Microsoft’s Windows Vista and may not work correctly under Vista. In particular, we have identified the following issues:

Program Help: If you try to access the program’s Help system, an error will appear.

However, the 2007 version of this program is Vista-compatible. For upgrade information, see http://www.nolo.com/support/upgrades.cfm.

Microsoft plans to make a free, Vista-compatible version of WinHelp (winhlp32.exe) will soon be available for download at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607. (As of this writing, the download is not yet available.) You should check there periodically to see if the download has been posted.

I am a Quicken WillMaker Plus 2005 user. What's new in the 2006 version?

Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006 includes many improvements over and changes from the 2005 edition. Here's a summary of the most important changes:

Revised documents: All documents have been reviewed for accuracy and ease of use, and have been updated where necessary. In particular, the living trust (basic and AB) and durable power of attorney for finances documents have been revised and updated.

  • The durable power of attorney for finances document now takes effect immediately upon signing (previously, there was an option to have it take not effect until you become incapacitated).
  • In the living trust document (basic and AB), you must nominate a group of three people to make a determination of incapacity (previously you designated a licensed physician to make this determination).
  • Updated living trust and power of attorney documents to avoid conflicts with HIPAA (a health care privacy law).
  • The information for caregivers and survivors form now lets you list important electronic information, such as online passwords and user names, for your survivors.

Legal Manual: Information in the Legal Manual has been updated where necessary.

User interface: We have made numerous improvements to the user interface, adding features and making it even easier to use.

  • The main program window is larger than in previous versions.
  • The program automatically checks for Web Updates at start up (if you want, you can turn off this feature by using the Edit menu's Preferences command).
  • When you start up the program, it will search for the most recently use documents file created with an older version of Quicken WillMaker. If it finds one, you'll be asked if you want to open it.
  • A simplified, easy-to-use tutorial to help you determine which estate planning documents you need.
  • Social Security information is now stored in the Contact List database.
  • A Calendar icon makes it easier to enter dates.
  • If you password-protect your documents files, you can now create a "hint" to help you remember the password you chose.
  • To protect you if you accidentally overwrite existing documents files, an additional backup -- named "Original of ..." -- is created.

I use an older version of Nolo's estate planning software. Why should I purchase Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006?

We strongly recommend that users of older Nolo estate planning software upgrade to Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006. It is very important that your legal software be up to date. Laws change frequently, and at Nolo we update our products accordingly. Documents and information included in older Nolo estate planning software have been updated in Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006.

Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006 is fully compatible with Quicken WillMaker Plus 2005 and 2004, Quicken WillMaker 2004, WillMaker 8, Quicken Lawyer Personal 2003 and 2002, and Quicken Lawyer Wills 2003 and 2002. This means that all your data will be converted and you can update and revise any document you created in these programs using Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006.

I use a previous version of Quicken WillMaker Plus and I am upgrading to the 2006 version. Do I need to uninstall the older version before installing Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006?

No. In fact, you should keep your old version of Quicken WillMaker until you have successfully opened and converted all your documents files with the 2006 version. Here's how:

To play it really safe, back up your Quicken WillMaker documents files on to a floppy disk, CD-ROM, or other external medium. Next, you should install Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006. When this is done, start the program and open your most recently used WillMaker documents file. If you’ve created any other WillMaker documents files, open them as well. Once a WillMaker documents file has been opened and converted to the 2006 format, you will not be able to open it again in a previous version of the program. (For more on opening documents files created with older versions, see the Quicken WillMaker Plus Users' Manual.)

I am a Quicken Lawyer Personal user. Do I need to uninstall Quicken Lawyer before installing Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006?

No. In fact, you should keep Quicken Lawyer Personal until you have successfully converted your portfolios (Quicken Lawyer 2002 Personal) or documents files (Quicken Lawyer 2003 Personal). Here's how:

To play it really safe, back up your Quicken Lawyer portfolios or documents files on to a floppy disk, CD-ROM, or other external medium. Next, you should install Quicken WillMaker Plus. When this is done, start the program and open your most recently used Quicken Lawyer documents file. If you’ve created any other Quicken Lawyer documents files, open them as well. Once a Quicken Lawyer documents file has been opened and converted to the Quicken WillMaker 2006 format, you will not be able to open it again in Quicken Lawyer. (For more on opening documents files created with older versions, see the Quicken WillMaker Plus Users' Manual.)

I am a Living Trust Maker 2 user. Do I need to uninstall Living Trust Maker before I install Quicken WillMaker Plus?

No. Living Trust Maker data files cannot be converted to Quicken WillMaker Plus documents files. You cannot use Quicken WillMaker Plus to revise, amend or revoke your Living Trust Maker trust documents.

If you have created a living trust using Living Trust Maker 2, you should not uninstall that program. You must keep it on your computer to maintain or revoke your Living Trust Maker trust. Only after you have revoked your trust should you consider uninstalling Living Trust Maker. Until then, both programs can safely be installed on the same computer.

For more information for Living Trust Maker users, see the Quicken WillMaker Plus Users' Manual, Part 1, Section B2.

I am a WillMaker 8 user. Do I need to uninstall WillMaker before I install Quicken WillMaker Plus?

No. In fact, you should keep WillMaker until you have successfully converted your WillMaker portfolio files. Here's how:

To play it really safe, back up your WillMaker portfolio files on to a floppy disk, CD-ROM, or other external medium. Next, you should install Quicken WillMaker Plus. When this is done, start the program and convert your WM8 portfolios. (For more on converting portfolio files, see the Quicken WillMaker Plus Users' Manual, Part 3, Section A2.)

Once you are sure all of your WillMaker 8 portfolio files have been converted to Quicken WillMaker Plus files, you can safely uninstall WillMaker 8.

I am a Quicken Family Lawyer user. Do I need to uninstall Quicken Family Lawyer before installing Quicken WillMaker Plus?

No, you do not need to uninstall Quicken Family Lawyer to use Quicken WillMaker Plus. While Quicken WillMaker Plus is not compatible with Quicken legal software created by Parsons Technology/Mattel/Learning Co (including any version of Quicken Family Lawyer), Quicken WillMaker Plus will not interfere with Quicken Family Lawyer or its data files. I am having trouble using Web Update. What can I do?

If you use a firewall & security application and receive warnings, you'll need to "allow" or add "f1.nolo.com" to the "trusted site" list.

If you still are unable to complete the update after adding f1.nolo.com to the trusted site list, you may need to completely turn off your firewall program in order to retrieve the update. Once the update is downloaded and installed, you can turn back on your firewall.

If you are a Windows XP Service Pack 2 user, the built-in "Windows Firewall" feature could prevent you from using Web Update. If, when you run Web Update, you see a Windows Security Alert asking you whether you want to keep blocking or unblock your Quicken program's Internet connection, select "Unblock." Once you have unblocked the Quicken program, you should be able to download future Web Updates.

If you are trying to update behind a corporate proxy server and get various error messages, you won't be able to use Web Update. Web Update was designed for the home user with a basic firewall. Unfortunately, we cannot support Proxy Servers and other corporate VPN security configurations.

If the problem persists, contact Nolo Technical Support at support@nolo.com. Please include the following details, so they will be able to help you:

  • How are you connected to the Internet (modem dial up, DSL, etc.)?
  • What version of Windows are you running?
  • Who is your Internet Service Provider?

Can I print a blank document before completing a document interview?

No. Your Nolo software creates custom documents based on your responses to document interview questions. There is no blank template that can be printed. If you just want to see what a document looks like, complete an interview with fictitious data and print it out. You should realize, however, that your actual customized document may look quite different.

Can I print a draft of a document that won't be mistaken for the final, signable version?

Yes. To print a document with each page of your printed document clearly labeled as a draft:

  1. Follow the program's instructions on completing and printing a document.
  2. At the "Print Preview" screen, click the "Print" icon. You'll then see a standard Print dialog box.
  3. In the Watermark box in the lower left of the Print dialog, select "Draft."
  4. Click "OK" to send the displayed document to your printer.

Can I print a copy of a document that won't be mistaken for the original version?

Yes. To print a document with each page of your printed document clearly labeled as a duplicate:

  1. Follow the program's instructions on completing and printing a document.
  2. At the "Print Preview" screen, click the "Print" icon. You'll then see a standard Print dialog box.
  3. In the Watermark box in the lower left of the Print dialog, select "Duplicate."
  4. Click "OK" to send the displayed document to your printer.

Can I open Quicken WillMaker documents in a word processor?

Yes. After you have completed your document, you can export it -- that is, save it as a text file that can be opened with a word processing program. This feature can be used if you:

  • are having problems printing directly from Quicken WillMaker
  • want a portable version of your document, which can be viewed on a computer where Quicken WillMaker is not installed.

Exporting the document allows you to print it from your word processing program. We strongly discourage using your word processor to edit or change the wording of an exported document. If you alter a document, we cannot guarantee its legal validity.

To export your completed document:

  1. Display your completed document on the "Print Preview" screen.
  2. Click the "Export" icon at the left of the "Print Preview" screen.
  3. Click "Continue" at the prompt explaining why you shouldn't change the wording of the exported document. This opens the Export Document dialog box.
  4. Name the exported file.
  5. Select the file type for the exported document: either Rich Text Format (RTF) or ASCII Text (TXT). If your word processor can "read" RTF files -- and most do -- you should select that file type, as it contains more formatting.
  6. Click "Save."
  7. Click "Yes" to open the exported file with your word processor.

Why won't the program allow me to arrange things exactly how I want in my estate planning documents?

Nolo's estate planning software enables most users to create legal documents that satisfy their needs without consulting a lawyer. There are complex situations, however, that are not handled by the program. The manual and program Help include thorough explanations of estate planning laws; they also point out when your situation may require an expert's help. If you want to include provisions in your estate planning documents that are not allowed by your software, take your unsigned document to a lawyer for fine tuning. The cost of the visit should be less than if the lawyer had created your document from scratch.

How can I reset my print options to the default settings?

While the program is running, select "Print Options" from the "File" menu. Click on the "Use Defaults" button to reset your print options.

Make sure that the margins are set as follows: Top -- 0.75", Bottom -- 0.45", Left -- 1.25", Right -- 1.25". The Line Spacing should be set to "Standard Spacing." The "Footers in smaller type" and "Footer in bold type" checkboxes should be checked and the "Use only standard ASCII characters" checkbox should not be checked. Click on "Fonts" button and make sure the Font is "Times New Roman", the Font Style is "Regular" and the Size is "12."

After I installed Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006, my anti-virus software, "Pest Patrol," alerted me that it contains the spyware "SpyBuddy." What should I do?

Pest Patrol is in error when you received this alert. There are no spyware, virus or worm files in this Nolo software. You can safely ignore this alert about "SpyBuddy": Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006 does not contain SpyBuddy (a commercial software that allows users to monitor and record all activity -- web sites browsed, emails sent, files created and deleted, etc. -- on their home computer).

Nolo's technical support team and software engineers have tested and researched this issue. In addition, we have contacted Computer Associates (makers of Pest Patrol), who have confirmed that this is alert is an error. Anti-spyware programs, like Pest Patrol, employ multiple layers of detection methods. These heuristic systems are not fool-proof; therefore false positives are common.

As stated above, we are in continuing contact with Computer Associates (the makers of Pest Patrol) and they should have this "false positive" issue corrected at some point.

If you have additional questions, or if any other program reports that Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006 contains spyware or a virus, please contact us immediately at support@nolo.com.

When I try to print one of my documents, why do I get strange characters, part of a page or nothing at all?

There can be several reasons for this.

Printer driver. You may have the wrong printer driver selected. Check your printer setup and go to your printer manufacturer's Web site to make sure you have the latest printer driver.

Interference by other software. Some programs alter the printer setup with special format commands or fail to reset a printer to its default settings when finished. Try resetting your printer by turning it off and on again before printing from Nolo software.

Network printers. If your printer is part of a network, the network itself may have special commands. Your system administrator may need to alter some settings.

When I try to print or display documents, I get GPFs or crashes/freezes. What can I do?

If you are having a printing problem, consult the "Troubleshooting" file from the "Start" menu. Here are some other tips:

  • Make sure you have the current version of your software by running Web Update. (For more on using Web Update, see "How do I keep my software program current and up to date?," above).
  • Get the latest printer driver. Make sure you have the current revision of your printer driver. Check your printer manufacturer's web site.
  • The program's registry settings may be corrupt. Start the program while holding down the CTRL key. This will reset the program's registry settings to their default values.
