I am a Quicken WillMaker Plus 2006 user. What's new in the 2007 version?

Quicken WillMaker Plus 2007 includes many improvements over and changes from the 2006 edition. Here's a summary of the most important changes:

Major Changes to documents:

  • Health care directive. The revised, full durable power of attorney for health care lets users name a trusted person to make all health care decisions for them if necessary, including managing care for long-term and chronic conditions such as Alzheimer’s Disease. (Previous versions of the program allowed users to name a health care representative to carry out only the specific wishes written in their living will.) In addition, the program provides new options and more flexibility for users who want to make a living will (write out their health care wishes).
  • Will. Now uses the state-specific term for the representative named to wrap up the will: "executor" or "personal representative."
  • Durable Power of Attorney for Finances. Now use the state-specific term for the representative named under the document: agent or attorney-in-fact. In addition:
    • Arkansas DPAFs no longer require witness signatures – just a notary.
    • Missouri requires some unusual language in the “effective date” section of the document, so we’ve added that.
    • Montana residents should now ask their agent to sign the power of attorney document. Our power of attorney contains a new signature block and instructions for folks in Montana.
  • Arkansas limited powers of attorney for finances no longer require witness signatures -- just a notary.
  • All documents for Alaska that include or mention a county name have been changed to refer to Alaska boroughs/judicial districts, which is what the state uses instead of counties.

New Forms: Full durable power of attorney for health care now included in the Health Care Directive module. Previously we only had a limited health care power of attorney.

Manuals: The Legal Manual and the Users' Manual have been updated where necessary.

Other new features:

  • You can click on a link at the document selection screen to see a sample of any form in the program.
  • You can more easily review property bequests (gifts) when making your will.
  • You can choose "Suggestion Box" from the Help menu to give us feedback on the program.
  • The navigation bar at the top of every screen has been simplified by removing infrequently used icons. We’ve added a "Users’ Guide" icon

I use a previous version of Quicken WillMaker Plus and I am upgrading to the 2007 version. Do I need to uninstall the older version before installing Quicken WillMaker Plus 2007?

No. In fact, you should keep your old version of Quicken WillMaker until you have successfully opened and converted all your documents files with the 2007 version. Here's how:

To play it really safe, back up your Quicken WillMaker documents files on to a floppy disk, CD-ROM, or other external medium. Next, you should install Quicken WillMaker Plus 2007. When this is done, start the program and open your most recently used WillMaker documents file. If you’ve created any other WillMaker documents files, open them as well. Once a WillMaker documents file has been opened and converted to the 2007 format, you will not be able to open it again in a previous version of the program.

NOTE: If you created a health care directives (living will) document with a pre-2007 version of WillMaker Plus, that document won't be converted when you open an older documents file. This document has been extensively revised and improved in the 2007 program. If you want to change the specifics of your a health care directive, you'll need to create a new one using Quicken WillMaker Plus 2007.

I upgraded to Quicken WillMaker Plus 2007 from an older version of the program. When I opened my old documents file with the new version of the program, my health care directive data was not converted. What should I do?

In the 2007 version, we have completely revised and improved the health care directives section:

  • You can now create a full durable power of attorney for health care, naming someone to make all medical decisions for you if necessary.
  • The living will document now allows you to specify even more detailed wishes for end-of-life health care.

Because of these changes, you won't be able to revise previously-created health care directives created Quicken WillMaker with older version of the program. If you want to change the details of your older directive, you'll need to create a new one from scratch using Quicken WillMaker 2007.

I am having trouble using Web Update. What can I do?

If you are running Microsoft’s Windows Vista, you will need to run WillMaker Plus as an administrator in order to update the software -- even if you're already logged in as one. For details, see our online instructions at http://www.nolo.com/VistaAdmin-WillMaker.pdf

If you use a firewall & security application and receive warnings, you'll need to "allow" or add "f1.nolo.com" to the "trusted site" list.

If you still are unable to complete the update after adding f1.nolo.com to the trusted site list, you may need to completely turn off your firewall program in order to retrieve the update. Once the update is downloaded and installed, you can turn back on your firewall.

If you are a Windows XP Service Pack 2 user, the built-in "Windows Firewall" feature could prevent you from using Web Update. If, when you run Web Update, you see a Windows Security Alert asking you whether you want to keep blocking or unblock your Quicken program's Internet connection, select "Unblock." Once you have unblocked the Quicken program, you should be able to download future Web Updates.

If you are trying to update behind a corporate proxy server and get various error messages, you won't be able to use Web Update. Web Update was designed for the home user with a basic firewall. Unfortunately, we cannot support Proxy Servers and other corporate VPN security configurations.

If the problem persists, contact Nolo Technical Support at support@nolo.com. Please include the following details, so they will be able to help you:

  • How are you connected to the Internet (modem dial up, DSL, etc.)?
  • What version of Windows are you running?
  • Who is your Internet Service Provider?

A name I entered in my document isn't printing correctly. What can I do?

If a name contains accent marks, umlauts or other special characters, those characters will not show up correctly in your printed document unless you change the default font (which is Times New Roman). Common Windows fonts that will correctly print special characters include:

  • Georgia (serif), and
  • Verdana (sans serif).

For details on how to change the fonts of printed documents, see the Users' Manual, Part 8, Section B.

Can I see an example of a document before completing a document interview?

Yes. If you just want to see an example what a completed document looks like before you start creating your own, here's how:

  1. Use the "Document List" screen to select the document you want to create.
  2. At the bottom of the description, find the "View an example ..." link and click it.

This will open completed version of the document you want to create, using fictitious data. You should realize, however, that your actual customized document might look different, based on the interview answers you give.

Can I print a blank document before completing a document interview?

No. Your Nolo software creates custom documents based on your responses to document interview questions. There is no blank template that can be printed. If you just want to see what a document looks like, complete an interview with fictitious data and print it out. You should realize, however, that your actual customized document may look quite different.

Can I open Quicken WillMaker documents in a word processor?

Yes. After you have completed your document, you can export it -- that is, save it as a text file that can be opened with a word processing program. This feature can be used if you:

  • are having problems printing directly from Quicken WillMaker
  • want a portable version of your document, which can be viewed on a computer where Quicken WillMaker is not installed.

Exporting the document allows you to print it from your word processing program. We strongly discourage using your word processor to edit or change the wording of an exported document. If you alter a document, we cannot guarantee its legal validity.

To export your completed document:

  1. Display your completed document on the "Print Preview" screen.
  2. Click the "Export" icon at the left of the "Print Preview" screen.
  3. Click "Continue" at the prompt explaining why you shouldn't change the wording of the exported document. This opens the Export Document dialog box.
  4. Name the exported file.
  5. Select the file type for the exported document: either Rich Text Format (RTF) or ASCII Text (TXT). If your word processor can "read" RTF files -- and most do -- you should select that file type, as it contains more formatting.
  6. Click "Save."
  7. Click "Yes" to open the exported file with your word processor.

Why won't the program allow me to arrange things exactly how I want in my estate planning documents?

Nolo's estate planning software enables most users to create legal documents that satisfy their needs without consulting a lawyer. There are complex situations, however, that are not handled by the program. The manual and program Help include thorough explanations of estate planning laws; they also point out when your situation may require an expert's help. If you want to include provisions in your estate planning documents that are not allowed by your software, take your unsigned document to a lawyer for fine tuning. The cost of the visit should be less than if the lawyer had created your document from scratch.

How can I reset my print options to the default settings?

While the program is running, select "Print Options" from the "File" menu. Click on the "Use Defaults" button to reset your print options.

Make sure that the margins are set as follows: Top -- 0.75", Bottom -- 0.45", Left -- 1.25", Right -- 1.25". The Line Spacing should be set to "Standard Spacing." The "Footers in smaller type" and "Footer in bold type" checkboxes should be checked and the "Use only standard ASCII characters" checkbox should not be checked. Click on "Fonts" button and make sure the Font is "Times New Roman", the Font Style is "Regular" and the Size is "12."

When I try to print one of my documents, why do I get strange characters, part of a page or nothing at all?

There can be several reasons for this.

Printer driver. You may have the wrong printer driver selected. Check your printer setup and go to your printer manufacturer's Web site to make sure you have the latest printer driver.

Interference by other software. Some programs alter the printer setup with special format commands or fail to reset a printer to its default settings when finished. Try resetting your printer by turning it off and on again before printing from Nolo software.

Network printers. If your printer is part of a network, the network itself may have special commands. Your system administrator may need to alter some settings.

When I try to print or display documents, I get GPFs or crashes/freezes. What can I do?

If you are having a printing problem, consult the "Troubleshooting" file from the "Start" menu. Here are some other tips:

  • Make sure you have the current version of your software by running Web Update. (For more on using Web Update, see "How do I keep my software program current and up to date?," above).
  • Get the latest printer driver. Make sure you have the current revision of your printer driver. Check your printer manufacturer's web site.
  • The program's registry settings may be corrupt. Start the program while holding down the CTRL key. This will reset the program's registry settings to their default values.
