If a debt has been passed along to a collection agency, you have
the right under federal law (the Fair Debt Collection Practices
Act) to tell a bill collector who works for a collection agency to
leave you alone.
The collection agency must then cease calling, sending letters
and otherwise communicating with you unless:
- they are ending collection efforts against you
- they are invoking a specific remedy against you, such as
taking you to court
To pursue your rights, you must put your demand in writing. Use
this form.
Important to Know:
- This does not apply to in-house collectors -- collectors who
work directly for a bank, department store or hospital.
