If you're in the process of buying a home, and will (like most people) be taking out a mortgage to do so, one of the forms you will soon become familiar with is the HUD Good Faith Estimate (GFE). This contains your lender's advance estimate of the various costs that you'll be responsible for when the mortgage is finalized. You will also, as part of the closing process, be given a written comparison of how close to the estimate the lender came.
Nolo's Essential Guide to Buying Your First Home was meant to contain a sample of the GFE on the CD-ROM, but this was inadvertently omitted. Fortunately, HUD makes the form available online; you'll find it at http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/rmra/res/gfestimate.pdf.
