The process of changing the gender on a California birth certificate has gotten easier because of a law (Cal. Health & Safety Code section 103426), which became effective on Jan. 1, 2014. Previously, someone who wished to change a birth certificate had to get a court order. Now, you can bypass the court and go directly to the California Office of Vital Records, with an affidavit (sworn statement) from your doctor that you have received clinically appropriate treatment for your gender transition. You must still get a court order for a legal name change.
