The travel agent caused us to cancel our trip -- shouldn't he pay?

Question:

My travel agent messed up on my mother's travel visa for her Europe tour. We returned the tickets. The agent says that we will be penalized for canceling late. I feel that the travel agent messed up, so he should give me a full refund and the penalty should be his problem, right?

Answer:

Give it a try and ask the agent for a refund. If he refuses, there are number of places you can to turn for help.

Ask the agent whether he belongs to any professional travel agents' association. Many of those associations mediate disputes like the one in which you may be involved, including:

U.S. Tour Operators Association, 212-599-6599, www.ustoa.com
National Tour Association, 800-682-8886, www.ntaonline.com
American Society of Travel Agents, 703-739-2782, www.astanet.com
International Airlines Travel Agent Network, 877-734-2826, www.iatan.org
The Travel Institute, 800-542-4282, www.icta.com.

If the agent is not a member of any of these associations, try a private travel consumer association, such as International Airline Passengers Association, at 800-821-4272, www.iapa.com, or Conde Nast Traveler magazine's column, "The Ombudsman." Pick up a copy at your newsstand for details.
