Is a court reporter always present during a criminal case?

Court reporters are usually present during criminal proceedings, but courts may routinely conduct some types of proceedings without them. Attorneys can request that judges order court reporters' presence for sidebar and in-chambers conferences that would otherwise be “off the record.”  Some courts now use recording devices instead of court reporters.
