eBay encourages you to operate a store (and over 300,000 eBay members have done so), but eBay stockholders prefer that you operate auctions and not fixed-price sales at stores. According to eBay President Meg Whitman, a 2006 increase in store fees was an attempt to push more sales back to auctions — where eBay earns more money. After the company announced it would raise store fees, eBay's stock jumped in value. Do the numbers to find out why: eBay store inventory represents about 83 percent of the listing volume on eBay's site but generates just 9 percent of the gross sales volume. That said, if an eBay store makes sense for you, go for it!
