Three Ways to Handle LLC Formation
$20-$70 plus filing fees*
Do it yourself. You can learn more about LLC formation procedures and fees for your state by visiting your state’s business filing office website (usually your state’s secretary of state). Start by finding your state’s home page (at www.statelocalgov.net), then look for links to either your secretary of state or business resources.
You can also get step-by-step instructions on forming an LLC in the book Form Your Own Limited Liability Company by Anthony Mancuso (Nolo), or by using the software program LLC Maker.
$200 to $300 plus filing fees*
Hire an incorporation service. Companies such as The Company Corporation (www.incorporate.com) will incorporate your business or form an LLC on your behalf. To locate one of these services, type “incorporation service” into your Internet search engine.
$500 to $1,000 plus filing fees*
Hire an attorney. An attorney can help form a corporation or an LLC, usually for a fixed fee.
*LLC filing fees in the majority of states are under $100. However, in some states the filing fees (or fees and annual LLC taxes) are as high as $900. For more information, see LLC Basics.
