What if April 15 rolls by and you haven't had time to complete your return? The consequences may not be as serious as you fear -- if you take some simple steps before the deadline. Anyone can get an automatic four-month extension of the filing deadline (it's "automatic" because anyone can get it, but you must file a form). An extension does not extend your time to pay taxes, however. You should also send in at least part of the taxes you expect to owe.
