- 1848 -- Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions -- Issued by America's first significant women's rights gathering at Seneca Falls, New York, at a time when American women had few legal rights and almost no career opportunities outside the home or farm.
- 1851 -- Sojourner Truth: "Ain't I a Woman?"-- This short, simple speech at the Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, was a powerful rebuke to many anti-feminist arguments of the day. It became, and continues to serve as, a classic expression of women's rights.
- 1873 -- Susan B. Anthony: "On Women's Right to Vote" -- A prominent leader in the women's rights movement, Anthony voted in the presidential election in November 1872. Two weeks later, she was arrested. Anthony delivered this famous speech after her indictment.
- 1920 -- 19th Amendment Gives Women the Right to Vote -- The 19th Amendment was the culmination of a long and difficult struggle, spanning generations of lobbying efforts and protests by supporters of women's suffrage.
- 1963 -- Equal Pay Act -- This landmark legislation -- an amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act -- made it illegal to pay lower wages to women who were doing the same jobs as men.
- 1968 -- Pregnancy Discrimination Act -- This key amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited workplace discrimination based on pregnancy.
- 1969 -- Shirley Chisholm: "For the Equal Rights Amendment" -- In this moving speech, the first African American woman elected to Congress urged her fellow lawmakers to pass the Equal Rights Amendment because "prejudice against women is still acceptable."
- 1973 - Frontiero v. Richardson -- The Supreme Court declares for the first time that discrimination based on gender is unconstitutional, striking down a federal law that used different eligibility criteria for males and females when it came to military salary supplements and housing allowances.
- 1973 -- Roe v. Wade -- The Supreme Court establishes that a woman has a constitutional right to terminate her pregnancy, at least in the first trimester. Prior to this decision, every state had laws making elective abortion (that is, abortion in cases where the pregnant woman's life is not in danger) a crime.
- 1993 -- Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 -- This pioneering law requires larger employers to give their workers up to 12 weeks off per year to care for a seriously ill family member, recuperate from a serious illness, care for a new child, or handle issues arising from a family member's call to active military duty.
