What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I am very happy to help clients learn about their legal issues. The client and I are much more likely to achieve a satisfactory outcome if the client thoroughly understands the law and the legal procedures.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I will always review documents prepared by clients. I like clients who are willing to take charge of their own cases. I understand that some clients prefer to save money by doing legal work themselves to the best of their ability.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I often coach clients in self-representation.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

When I was an undergraduate, I took some classes in the Paralegal Department of my college. Law was the first subject that I was passionately interested in.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have 26 years of experience doing family law. My additional training in mediation and collaborative law has been helpful as well.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

When I first graduated from law school, I did not know what type of law I wanted to practice, so I tried many different areas. Over the years, it turned out that family law is what I like best and what I'm best at.

What do you like best about your career?

I like the opportunity to help people during a difficult time in their lives. A divorce is never pleasant, but a good attorney can keep it from spinning out of control. I like seeing my clients move on with their lives after achieving the best possible result in their legal matter.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a sole practitioner. I share office space with other attorneys who practice immigration, landlord/tenant, personal injury, and wills and trusts.

What are your strengths and style?

I am very knowledgeable in all areas of family law. I am a practical person and can usually find solutions to most problems. Other lawyers often refer cases to me which appear too difficult or complicated for them to sort out.

I believe an attorney should always treat other attorneys, clients and opposing parties with the utmost professional courtesy. I always like to see cases resolved without litigation, and I encourage my clients to use alternative dispute resolution such as mediation or collaborative law. However, I will litigate in an appropriate case.

Personal Interests:

My main extra-curricular activity is "competing in agility" with my two Pomeranians, Sasha and Little Bear. I am also active in the Green Party of San Francisco.
