Firm Focus and History

I help people with all of their estate planning documents, trusts & wills, powers of attorney, domestic partnership representation, bankruptcy and credit issues. I was in probate practice for 4 years, and then was with the Illinois Attorney General's Office and the U.S. Department of Justice. Since then, I have been in private practice for 14 years.

Previous Employment Summary

In between the times when I have been in private practice, I was in probate practice, and then was with the Illinois Attorney General's Office and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Activities and Awards

I work pro bono for nonprofit organizations to help them get their corporate status and their tax-exempt status.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I love it. It helps if they have a desire to help the whole process. If they've done their homework before they come in, it makes my job easier.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Yes.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I wouldn't coach anyone doing their own bankruptcy. It's too difficult these days for clients to do this on their own.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I became a lawyer to help people with legal issues.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Working in the justice department, which was intense and the best training I could have gotten, helped me to be a better lawyer. I have also worked for what I believe to be 3 of the best lawyers, 2 of whom are now judges, and 1 is the managing partner for one of the largest law firms on the world.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I decided on my specialty because it's a lot of detail work, and a lot of planning for any possibility.

What do you like best about your career?

Best: helping people; when people come in not feeling so good and feel much better when they leave. I see people come from the arch of financial desperation and later come back with estate planning questions, which means that they are doing well and had never believed it possible.

Tell us about your law firm:

We try to make an office that anyone would feel comfortable in. We're not quite a family, but we're a friendly group of people. We all get along, we like to work, but have a good time while we're working. We treat people how we would want to be treated and deal with people as people, not just as another case. We are also kid-friendly.

What are your strengths and style?

My unique strength is my compassion and the fact that I have many years of experience.

I like to be professional, personable, and cooperative - I don't believe in confrontation, but rather in making the law a healing process. I believe it should be more like Mediation, which was originally the role of lawyers.

Personal Interests:

I like to write and be with my dog.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
