Employment & Labor Relations
Primarily, I prefer working with private employers of any size, helping them understand and comply with California's numerous employment laws, and where litigation cannot be avoided, giving them the best defense possible. I also enjoy working with employees who have legitimate, serious claims against unscrupulous employers.

On the defense (employer) side, I have been lead litigation counsel in (1) defending a class action lawsuit against a major California overnight delivery company for alleged minimum wage and overtime violations, (2) defending wrongful termination and sexual harassment lawsuits brought by former employees of a national bank; and (3) defending a rural hospital in the Lake Tahoe region against an employee's disability discrimination lawsuit.
On the plaintiff (employee) side, I have obtained several "handsome" settlements for employees who (1) were wrongfully terminated, (2) were victims of discrimination or harassment, or who (3) were terminated but not paid their earned wages or commissions.

It's important, but they should not be penny-wise and pound-foolish. They can significantly improve the speed and accuracy of the learning process and their understanding of the law, by working with experienced counsel.
No problem.
I would evaluate this on a case-by-case basis.
I enjoy people and problem-solving, especially when complex issues and personalities are involved. The law provides a general set of rules for all to follow, but there are endless gray areas, which is when conflicts usually arise. Each time I agree to represent a new client or to take on a new case, I get the opportunity to tackle one of these gray areas.
Before opening my own firm in January 2005, I worked for approximately 12 years for a large, full-service firm in Sacramento where I had access to over 100 attorneys practicing in all aspects of law. Since my admission to the California bar in 1993, I've litigated more than 100 cases involving the full range of state and federal employment laws.
I chose to focus my practice on employment law because, unlike other areas of law (e.g., construction), it is people-oriented. I also chose to focus on employment law because almost everyone is either an employee or an employer, so there is both a great need for a person with my expertise and plenty of opportunity to find and work with new clients.
Every day is different, and each case presents its own set of unique facts, characters, and events.
All great people, most of us came from the same big firm in Sacramento.
I write well, I'm calm under pressure and articulate, I'm able to explain complex legal issues to non-lawyers in plain English, and I'm personable.
