Wills, Trusts & Estates
I enjoy working with individuals and couples to plan how they are going to care for their family and friends. For families with young children, we designate guardians, determine how the money should be held in trust to be managed for the children, etc. For couples or individuals with grown children or no children, we plan for how to meet my client's needs and also how to accomplish their goals for their children and/or favorite charities. Sometimes this means that the assets for adult children will be kept in a trust for the child's benefit. There are also a number of ways individuals and couples can have an impact on issues of importance by leaving money to charity.

I regularly attend estate planning courses in order to keep my knowledge and skills current. In the last two years alone, I have attended more than 25 hours of course work.
While the net worth of most of my clients is between $500,000 and $5,000,000, some individuals and couples I work with are just getting started in their careers and their estates are worth significantly less than $500,000. Regardless of the size of the estate, I have found it takes careful planning to determine what is right for each family.
Examples:
Assisting older clients in setting up their estate plan and determining the type of trust they should have, ensuring that their sizeable estate will be available to the surviving spouse but protected for their children in the event that the surviving spouse remarries.
Assisting married or single individuals with planning for who should care for their children and how the couple's money should be managed for their children.
Working with an adult child who is the executor of her mother's estate and assisting her with maintaining a good relationship between her siblings.

My practice focuses strictly on estate planning, probate and trust administration. My goal is to work with clients to learn what their needs are and then assist them in accomplishing their goals. When working with individuals, I seek to create an environment where my clients feel comfortable discussing their needs and asking questions. When providing advice, I strive to help my clients understand the advice I am providing. This enables my clients to make informed decisions.
I previously worked as an associate with a sole practitioner who handled estate planning, trust administration and trust litigation. This experience taught me how to draft estate plans in anticipation of unexpected litigation. I later worked as an associate with a law firm in San Francisco. This provided me with lots of opportunities to draft estate plans for individuals with a high net worth.
None at this time.
It depends on the legal issue involved and the individual's learning style. Many individuals who work with me have been referred to me by their accountant or financial planner and as a result have received some education about what type of estate planning they need. Other individuals realize they need a trust because of a book, magazine or newspaper article they have read. While it is helpful for clients to be familiar with what a trust can do and the importance of estate planning, I feel that educating my clients is also part of my job.
Evaluating a client's goals and desires in light of other issues, such as estate taxes, is an important part of my representation of a client. Often, individuals will share information during the planning process, which they believe is unimportant, but drastically affects the provisions that are included in a client's estate planning documents. Without going through the entire planning process with a client, it is difficult to know whether I have all of the necessary information to accurately evaluate whether a client-drafted estate plan does actually accomplish what the client wants. For these reasons, and for liability reasons, I do not review documents prepared by clients.
For liability reasons, I do not represent individuals in matters like this.
I enjoy seeing my clients protect their hard-earned assets for their children, other family, friends and charitable organizations they want to benefit.
In estate planning, listening to your clients is important in order to create a plan that meets the clients' needs and desires. In college and law school, I worked in different positions where I learned that in order to meet the individual's needs, it is necessary to put aside preconceived notions and listen to what the individual needs or wants.
Seeing my parents have an appreciation for how their attorney helped to plan for their future and their children's future was instrumental in my decision to practice estate planning. During law school, I took a course in wills & trusts and loved it. After taking a course in Gift & Estate Tax, I knew I wanted to practice Estate Planning. I now help individuals and families plan for the future just as my parents' attorney did.
I always tell people, "I have the best clients!" I get to work with really interesting people and help them plan to protect their families. While it can be challenging when a client or a family member of a client has passed on, I have an opportunity to help families through something that can be very difficult.
The firm is comprised of myself and my assistant.
In addition to being knowledgeable about estate planning, my clients feel comfortable talking with me. I am able to explain a complex subject in a manner that enables individuals to understand it. Many people who have put off their estate plan because they don't want to discuss, and feel they cannot discuss, the difficult issues estate planning involves have been happily surprised at how easy it is to give me the information I need to design their estate plan.
My goal is to make my clients feel comfortable and help them understand complex subject matter.
I enjoy spending time with my family, outdoor activities, gardening, and arts and crafts.

For estate planning, I try to quote a fixed fee for clients when it is possible. The fee will be based on the work I anticipate handling for the client and will. For preparation of wills, a trust, durable powers of attorney and advance health care directives, the fees can range from $2,000 - $3,500, depending on an individual or couple's needs.
$235
Hourly rates apply for initial consultation.
It depends on the work. For trust administrations, it is generally $3,500 - $5,000.
