Wills, Trusts & Estates
I enjoy custom drafting trusts and designing estate plans. I charge a flat fee for a complete trust package including a first and final draft of the trust, "pourover" will(s); durable power(s) of attorney; advance health care directive(s); deed to transfer personal residence to the trust; preliminary change of ownership report; account retitling letter(s); coordination of beneficiary designations on non-trust assets; and a detailed letter of instruction. If there is a complicated situation, such as a family business, multiple properties in other states, additional hourly fees will apply. I enjoy complicated and simple estate planning, solving problems and working with families.

Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law
California State Court
State Bar of California
I continuously strive to stay current with legislation, case law and trends in the areas of estate planning, probate and elder law. I typically complete at least three times as much continuing education as the State Bar requires.
I have drafted over 1000 trusts and represented over 1300 individuals and families. I have assisted many clients' families with settling their estates after the clients have died. The families have been pleased and surprised by how fast, simple and inexpensive the process can be when the client has a properly drafted and funded revocable living trust.

Our focus is on estate planning, probate, estate administration, special needs trusts and charitable gifting. I work with individuals and families who want to simplify their estates for their heirs and minimize taxes and transfer fees.
I come to the estate planning field with a background in counseling. Before law school, I was a career counselor at Hartnell College in Salinas. I have a degree in marriage and family counseling, which helps in advising families and individuals. I also worked for a few years in financial planning.
I regularly provide free public service seminars on a variety of estate planning topics, which are offered through local charities and churches. We have a bookkeeping service associated with our law firm, which is partly owned by my wife. The firm only works with personal bookkeeping and does bill paying, file and tax organization, and utilizes Quicken and QuickBooks.
I enjoy working with clients who are informed and interested in estate planning issues. They save my time and their money. It is important to remember that this is a very complicated area with changing laws and it is crucial to have current and complete information upon which to base one's decisions.
I will review wills prepared by a client at my normal hourly fee. However, my fees for drafting a trust are quite reasonable, so most people would find it advantageous to have me prepare their trust for a flat fee. Document review time can be part of the initial consultation without charge.
I do not coach clients on self representation. My practice generally does not result in litigation or courtroom work. I have, however, assisted a few people who wanted to do probates on their own.
I like the challenge of helping people solve problems. I find my background in counseling to be very useful, and I feel like I can make a positive difference in the lives of others. I enjoy saving my clients and their families a great deal of money and helping them through a difficult time when death occurs.
I take a lot of continuing education classes, do a lot of reading and self-study and I network with other attorneys, CPAs, financial planners and bank trust officers.
I am not confrontational, so I don't care for litigation, but I do like to help people solve problems. Estate planning and trust work is the ideal legal specialization for me.
What I like best about my career is all the great clients I get to know and work with.
I have an office manager, two paralegals, a bookkeeper and a student intern, all of whom are great people to work with and who are competent, kind, considerate and ethical.
I am an excellent listener/counselor/problem solver/educator. My clients are assured of getting a comprehensive, custom-drafted estate plan that reflects their desires and is legally sound.
I am friendly, considerate and non-judgmental. I ask a lot of questions and take time to educate clients who want to better understand estate planning, probate and trust administration.
My personal interests include enjoying time with my wife and my two sons, church and charity volunteer work, travel, reading, listening to music, and watching movies and plays.
