I was first a personnel specialist and later a management analyst with the government.
I am a Law Professor at the Ventura College of Law and the Santa Barbara College of Law. I am also on the board of the Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association.
I am all in favor of it. I think that every client should get a copy of Nolo's "Law Suit Survival Guide."
Yes, especially if they are submitted in electronic form. Very willing the client knows more about the case than the attorney ever will, but the attorney needs to focus on the argument so that the employee can win on the legal issues.
I am willing to give potential clients information, but the State Bar requires that if I give them advice they become clients.
During my 25 year government career, I was involved in a lot of situations where I was able to stand up for employment rights, and when I retired I was able to complete law school, pass the bar on my first attempt and open a successful practice.
My government career, serving on nonprofit boards, a love for learning and applying the law to help people improves any lawyer.
Starting when I was a personnel specialist I saw that good managers used the rules and regulations to select and promote the best employees. But I also saw a few managers who ignored the rules and regulations in an attempt to promote lesser-qualified employees because of their sex, age, etc. I learned how to stand up to those managers by showing them the rules and, since promoting the more qualified person was good for business, was able to demonstrate why the rules were there. Now that I am an attorney, I use the law to protect employees from illegal actions. Employment law is more rewarding to me because I have a greater sense of accomplishment because I can help people who really need it. I wouldn't be able to do that as much in other areas of law.
I only take cases where I can help people and that give me a lot of personal satisfaction and a high rate of success.
The people in my firm get along like family. I have a paralegal, assistant and a bookkeeper/receptionist who love working here and never lose perspective. My legal assistant has a masters degree in psychology, so when she talks to potential clients she can really help them and martial their strength to be able to do the hard work necessary to win a case. And, I use contract attorneys when appropriate.
Juries love me. I understand the employment arena and I understand people.
I am a very intellectual person and so I really analyze things and I am rarely caught by surprise. This allows me to be calm and think before I react. I have a great sense of humor. I can make the whole courtroom laugh when it is appropriate to use humor.
Very active in church, I sing in a choir, my family, scuba diver, and sports official.
