Continuing Education

Example Cases

I represented a gay man who had been harassed by his former partner. The partner had stolen his car keys so that my client could not get into his car where his Siberian Husky was. My client tried several times to get the partner to return his keys without success, finally after much frustration and worry about his dog; he smashed a beer bottle over his partners head and retrieved the keys. He was charged with felony assault and could have faced state prison, and was also a combat veteran. I was able to convince the court to reduce the charge to a misdemeanor and secure no jail time for my client because of these special circumstances.

Firm Focus and History

I have been practicing as a Criminal Defense Lawyer for more than 10 years. Having offices in Santa Rosa and San Mateo I practice in every county of the San Francisco Bay Area, and many North Bay counties as well the Sacramento area. I provide representation in both felony and misdemeanor cases including domestic violence, drunk driving, drug possession, assault, theft crimes, violation of probation and driver's license suspension. I also provide representation in certain juvenile matters.

Previous Employment Summary

Prior to starting the practice of law, I was a police officer in the Bay Area for a period of 10 years.

Activities and Awards

I give free advice to active military that need legal representation and advice.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

A client is well served by educating themselves on legal issues pertaining to them because it gives them direct knowledge and understanding on their case and can make them better able to assist their attorney.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am willing to review clients documents during my initial consultation which is up to 45 minutes in length.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

No, in my opinion it is not in the client's best interest to try to represent him or herself in a criminal matter because the legal consequences including possible jail or prison time are too great.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I enjoy meeting and helping people. My ten years as a police officer has given me a real insight and understanding of the law. Sometimes as a police officer I saw that the law was not always fair as written or as applied, which gave me a desire to use my knowledge and experience to help people.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have ten years experience as a street cop in a Bay Area city, three years experience as a soldier and a military police man in the U.S. Army and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a lot of life experience doing many jobs from pumping gas to working on a ranch to doing counseling.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Because of my police background and because I like dealing directly and personally with clients. I enjoy negotiating and arguing and being in court. I am very much a hands on person.

What do you like best about your career?

The variety of people I meet and help, the challenge, the ability to make a difference in a person's life, and a chance to help people that are overwhelmed or bullied by the SYSTEM.
